Smelling the flowers once again...

I’ve been watching with amazement the rescue of the 33 miners who have been trapped underground in a Chilean mine and the scenes are extraordinary and very moving with all the reunions amongst families.
As I’ve been watching this I’ve been thinking about what these men have endured underground for these long months. I’ve also thought as we’ve been enjoying our gardens and our normal day-to-day activities they have been far underground with no scents or visions of things beautiful.
What, I wonder, will it be like for them now to be above ground and have their senses awakened to familiar things once again? I’m hoping they can feast their eyes on a beautiful view of landscape and flowers very soon.
Just a rambling thought to share…not really a gardening topic…but I believe worth a mention. As I write this, 15 of the thirty-three miners have now been brought to the surface.
It’s a good day for being alive.
The sign “Keep It Simple” was one designed by my son during my period of illness last year and it seemed right to include it in this blog. These men will have many complicated situations to cope with as they recover and readjust to life. I really hope things are kept simple for them, and their families. As I said earlier….It’s a good day for being alive :)

Well done Whistonlass! I too have been following the rescue programme, I woke up 4 am this morning, they were on my mind, turned the TV on at that time, to hear 5 were up, I pray they all get out of there safely...I cannot relax until every single one of them are out of there...including the doctor and whoever else is down there with them, then they should seal that hole for good!

I think I would struggle to last one hour in that situation! I'm so glad they are nearly all free again :-)))

I don't have a TV but, listening to radio updates, one can only imagine the hope and stress of those waiting for their loved ones; so near and yet so far.
I'm sure that it will all end well but I'd hate to stand, biting my nails and counting the trips until 'mine' was safe.

like all the other comments hope & pray they all get into the light and are able to cope, the governments organising the rescue have worked so hard to think of everything to help them

Also been watching all day, cannot imagine what it must be like for them and the families, can only hope and pray they get some peace whilst getting over their ordeal.........

Imagine being the last person to come up ... that would be so spooky.
One miner proposed to his girlfriend from down there & she managed to say 'yes' in a 20 second phonecall to him!
It won't be long now before they are all up & safe. :o)

Hear, hear. What a days viewing and I shed a tear as each one came up.

i echo all your thoughts and wishes ..my thoughts have been with their families today...

What I loved about it all was the way each one unashamedly thanked God.

Yes, Daisy....many of the miners are men of faith and it was very moving to see them giving thanks on their knees. It's hard to imagine how they are all feeling. It must be so overwhelming.
I am pleased so many of us GOY friends recognize the significance of this rescue mission. Thanks for all your comments.

It was nothing short of a miracle, can't imagine how the rescued miners and their families must be feeling;0))

It's a fantastic lesson to us all about hope, resilience and the true meaning of life!

Yes, I agree Meanie....it's so good that countries have co-operated together in this rescue as well....it is possible to get along and help one another. Gives us all hope. :)

I too have been watching the rescues today. I find the emotional reaction from the families quite overpowering. It is wonderful to see people help each other in this way.

All 33 miners are now safely up....just the last of the 6 rescuers to come up now. What a day this has been. The whole operation has progressed so quickly. I wonder what the terrain is like where the miners are living? I really hope they get to view things of beauty....flowers, sky, family. It is just past 2am as I write this so I just need to calm down now and toddle off to my bed. :)

Yay ! All 39 men [ miners and rescuers ] now back up on the surface ...
... amazing ...

You have to admire the support staff who went down too - that took balls to do in untried circumstances.

Yes.. that's why I put 39 not 33
MisiĆ³n cumplida ... :o)

Good on 'em. Hadn't thought of that before Jacquie, them not being able to smell flowers etc. So glad they are all safe and well now - Praise God!!

Congratulations on a lovely blog, Whistonlass, like you I watched the rescue and gave thanks for the miners safe return to their families/friends. I have a fear of underground/caves etc and just cannot imagine how they coped for so long. Love your slogan, Keep it simple, too - just what we all need when life gets a bit complicated :)

we watched it on and off all day and until late last night, the President and his wife we thought were wonderful people being there all the time, I cried each time they brought one of the miners up and saw them reunited with their families, the men on top worked so hard, it was brilliant and I was so pleased when they were finally all out, must have been horrendous for them and their families, well done for your Blog Whistonlass, lets pray that they see and smell very soon, you raised a good point here.

Watched and waited for their return like a lot more, my own feelings were of anxiety and the overwhelming fear that I have of being in an enclosed space did not do me any good at all, I do not comprehend how they managed to keep their sanity down there, I suppose because they are miners and used to being in a confined space went towards helping their situation, but my chest felt tight and I felt very restricted with my breathing just watching it all unfold. I am so pleased that they and their rescuers got out of that mine safely, you are so right Whistonlass it makes us all feel good to be alive. We should not take life for granted and we should all live life to the full, you never know what is round the corner. Thank goodness!! I just hope that they are left in peace now to try and get back to normality, but I don't suppose that will happen the media will pester and pester for a lot longer still.

I hope they will be able to re-adjust with help. They must have been through a terrible ordeal. Nice of you to put this blog :o)

It's good to share in such a victorious outcome as this mining accident. I cannot begin to imagine the emotions that these men and their loved ones are going through...it must feel akin to rebirth...they'll be seeing their world with new eyes I'm certain.
It's lovely to read all the comments on my blog. I did hesitate about putting it up and I am so glad that I did now.

Yes, hard to imagine not to have your freedom for so long. I think when they said about having to go into a darkened hospital room to let their eyes readjust, thats what brought it home to me- no sun set/rises...........................

Excellent blog, brave men, cannot think of anything worse, (I suffer with claustrophobia) and the very though of being stuck down there for that amount of time......shocking, as you say thoughts and prayers go out to the miners and their families.

Lovely blog W'lass, you are so right about realising how precious our lives are and how easily they can be affected by disasters such as this one. Makes you want to go and give all your loved ones a hug too and say how much you love them while you can.

Great Blog W/lass. My eyes filled up with the rescue of them all. It reached so many people hearts, there are a lot of good people around, shame all the bad people couldn't go though what they did then maybe the world would be a better place. Opppp's! Better get off my soap box, Sorry :o)))

So true, I've been thinking the same kinds of things WL. What it would be like to be in such a hot dark place for so long......can't imagine it....don't want to! I bet their lives will all be changed, hopefully mostly for the better...but there will be lots of psychological readjustments and possibly scars to bear. Amazing seeing them coming out...like being re-born in some ways, coming up in that tiny tube through that narrow passage and in to the light! Been tearful about it all day!
