Joys of January.

Yes, I agree, there aren’t many are there?
Today has been the exception to the rule. The sun has been shining, there is no cold breeze and these flowers have come through the cold and the rain to cheer up this rather dreary month. Hope you have had some sunshine today and been able to take a look outside too.
This is a new hellebore which I bought in the late autumn. It is called ‘Cinnamon Snow’ and has been very pretty for quite some time now.
We have a number of camellias which we buy from a nursery near Launceston. They charge £1 each for little cuttings and have lots to choose from. It is a lovely place to visit, just like stepping back in time.
This is the first to flower and is called ‘Donation’ I think.
The winter heathers give much needed colour too. They are close to the house which is nice.
Little clusters of primroses have flowered all winter and even some primulas in pots have come into flower too.
I know they are not at their best but the fact that they are there at all is enough to make me appreciate them!
The mahonia flowers have such a lovely scent, just like lily of the valley to me.
I like this container because of the colours and the frosty look to the leaves.
The two last photos look back to the summer – a small patio rose is still in flower; and also look forward to the spring, when bulbs will brighten up our gardens.
These photos are not from our garden. We saw these statues on holiday and I thought they were very sweet so would like to show them to you. It is now 2pm and is already becoming chilly – January joys are short – lived aren’t they?!

The more I see images of Hellebores on GOY, the more I wonder why we don't grow them. They are so eye-catching. Really like your "Cinnamon Snow".
Our daughter has already had some lovely camellias bloom in her garden and we have had one or two. They do point towards Spring.....which is nice!

Cute Statues Chris! Lucky you for having some sunshine. I think that day we went up Craigowl Hill was the only couple of hours of sun we’ve had so far this January. Luckily it was 6C this morning, So I did get some gardening done which was great, but boy was it dark and miserable. And January seems to go on twice as long as any other month!

I am absolutely sure Hywel will love those statues !
Thank you for finding some flowers to cheer us all today.

I think Cinnamon Snow is beautiful. Thank you for your blog Wildrose, you've really made me think towards spring..

well no sun for us today but I appreciate yours. None of my hellebores are in flower yet so I will admire yours. Lots of buds though so plenty to look forward to. Nearly half way through January already.
Must have a good look round the garden tomorrow.

You have a lovely range of plants. I have Cinnamon Snow but there is no sign of significant growth on any our Hellebores. We have had a very cold day and going outside was a no no as the wind would have blown us away. It has been a howling gale for more than 24 hours. There have been lots of accidents if the number of police and ambulances going past is anything to go by. The soft pink and grey of your cyclamen in the pot is very welcome. Your heathers are further out than mine How long did it take for your camellia cuttings to start flowering.

We bought Cinnamon Snow a few years ago, and it has proved to be a good doer......such a delight to see so much going on in your garden, btw love the cherubs, I am very partial to a cherub or two....

I will echo all the above comments about your Cinnamon Snow,Chris..it's a beauty..and the lighter colour really stands out doesn't it? unlike some Hellebores..Those little statues are so lovely too.I'm not one for this kind of thing, but I will make an exception in this case :o)You have so much lovely colour in your garden at the moment, and everything is so much further on than here in my garden..lucky you,to look out at all this ..x

Such lovely comments from you all, thank you very much indeed.
Since putting on this blog, we have had gales, rain, hail, and even thunder and lightning this afternoon - serves me right really!!!
Next time we have a warm, sunny day I am keeping quiet about it!

A horrible day here too Chris, but no thunder and lightning..A glimmer of hope for tomorrow ,as it may be slightly warmer 4/5 degrees ! and some sunshine in the afternoon..all I can hear at the moment,is hailstones battering the window...oh joy ! x

So changeable isn't it, don't think its bothering our plants though, nice to see the colour in your garden W'rose, I'm a fan of all Hellebores and Cinnamon Snow is gorgeous, mines not out yet though some are, I don't mind as it means I get to see them for longer, do like your Camellia, I only have one and its in a pot as doesn't like my soil, if mine looks like yours I'll be a happy gardener, not out yet but lots of buds, keeping an eye on it and the weather just in case, if we do get a big freeze I'll pop it in bottom g'house tootsweet....

All our camellias are in pots too because of our unsuitable soil. I repotted most of them last year so am hoping that they do well in their extra space!
