Moraeas

I was lucky today with several species of Moraea opening, several for the first time.
An early opener is Moraea flaccida. This is a part of the group that used to be called Homeria, but it has been decided to merge them with the Moraeas. It is a big problem lately that many bulbs are getting shifted around and it is harder to figure out which genus everything is in. It has only one leaf and the flower stalk.
While that one is 6cm across, another refugee from the Homeria genus is Moraea marlothii which is only 2 cm across.
The center sticks out as far as it is wide. This also has one leaf and the flower stalk.
Opening for the first time is Moraea britteniae:
It is a nice soft yellow with green markings coming out of the throat.
The really established types can put on a show. Here is the Moraea vegata with several flowers open at once:
They like to open very fast.

By growing the South African bulbs, I get to garden all year round. No snow days for me! Since most of these flowers only last a single day, my garden seems to change every day and I never know what it will look like tomorrow. I don't have a single rose, so I understand that certain flowers aren't for everyone.

Very dainty looking flowers, I quite like the idea of changes every day, always something to look for...

I like the two bottom ones best - the lemon is such a dainty shade.

Gosh look at the colour of Moraea flaccida. Beautiful! So sad the flowers have such a short life but as you point out they certainly add variety to your garden.
Some cactus flowers do that : flower over night and are dead by morning. My parents used to stay up just to see this . I didn't!!

Thanks. The Moraea flaccida has had flowers for the last several days, and another today. They make up in quantity for being short lived.

It must be an acquired taste. It would take me a long time
to acquire it.
