The poinsettia everyone wants
12 comments
This is the poinsettia everyone wants. I took the picture today Dec 23rd in my backyard. The first time I saw one of these was in Auckland, NZ. It was a massive bush my landlady had in her frontyard, about 10 feet tall. I managed to get a piece from my neighbor a few years back when they were trimming theirs’, and all I did was stick it in the ground and it grew. The most important thing to do is give it protection from the wind. Many people here have them, but when the wind blows, it knocks the green leaves off and there is a bunch of branches with red “flowers”. So I have mine kind of hidden just so it won’t look so naked. My neighbor has made hers into a wall and it looks amazing right now. But if it isn’t pruned every year it gets stringy. This isn’t the one you buy in the stores. No hiding in the dark and no pampering.

It's very nice. I wish we could grow them here in Wales but we only have the indoor type, I'm not really keen on those myself.
Merry Christmas :o))

The color comes from it not being lipstick red and the mobile phone I have. It is more magenta than pink.

Hi, do you know the name of this variety?

As far as I can figure out, the key element to getting it to grow as a perennial is temperature, above 50 F. But I was told I couldn't plant a store bought poinsettia outside, and sure enough it died after 4 months. It could be the way the plant was crossed back in the 50's. But the only two places I've seen it growing outside is here and Auckland, NZ.

I also have a very large poinsettia in my garden in Cyprus. Everyone else has them too. I also, was told it is the same variety as the Christmas type but that the little inside ones have been forced and will only grow outside if you are very lucky. Does anyone know what the original poinsettia was like? I believe it was found in South America by a man from Portugal but I could be wrong.

Very nice - doubt it would survive outdoors in Scotland though
