Alpines - Then and Now

Last autumn, I built a new bed for my alpines. I thought you might like to see how this is coming on now.
This is the area before work started – not very successful was it?
And this is how it looked when the new bed had been built and a few plants added last September
Since then, I have added more plants and dressed the area with gravel. The wood has started to mellow too
No doubt more plants will ‘arrive’ in due course but I think it’s an improvement and a good addition to the garden.

....and you can sit down to 'garden' it.

is the wood treated? and how long is it expected to last before it weathers so much as to need repair? it does look awfully good! brings the smaller plants up to where it's easier to admire them

Fran - the wood is oak railway sleepers so should last a long time. If you look at my blog 'Glassing It Over' written earlier this month, you can get a glimpse of how it looks now

Ah yes, thanks Andrew. love the sleepers as the bed! And that would work in my garden too as I have loads of sleepers in already. the problem I have is.....it would have to be a choice between alpine bed (needs sun) or wildlife pond (in the same space)....mmm...need to think more on this dilemma!
