The Wildlife

On days when the wind is not doing natures fall cleaning, I like to pack up my camera and take off for a walk on a well known trail named “The Larry Scott Trail”. It’s begining is not far from my home, but first we must walk through the forest.
I suggest if we run across any cougars or bear that we all stand very tall and back away..slowly…would you all feel better wearing some bells?
Here we are..we have walked only a few hundred feet from my home. These are my neighbors homes and as you can see, I have made sure the sun was shining on this day and into my favorite trees, Madrona’s of course….
Now I suggest you speak normally, do not try to be quiet, there are deer, bear, cougar, coyote and racoons in this forest. We will be going down a steep section here and I am not going to be taking pictures. I hope you have good gripping boots for hiking for this part…my dogs are with us..they are perfect for letting me know if there might be danger about.
The trail flattens here.. and I have managed to stop the dogs while I take this picture..oh my, they do find my picture taking a bother…whimpering and not wanting to heel..far too much excitement for this!
Again… to my dogs disgust, we must stop. I want to show you how the forest envelopes us here…listen …. chirping..a snap…deer? hmmm..could be.
The light leads us on, it is morning, so this bright ray is coming from the East…it is probably mid afternoon in the UK and the day is only beginning here.
The dogs have been with us all along ..right now they are all on leashes to keep them calm on the trails. Only one will be leashed on the way back..Phoebe is telling us ..to be cautious now, this is steep and you know Mom. She is not normally happy at us pulling her head over tea-kettle, so go slowly and we will have fun soon.
As we emerge from the forest trail, we always check the deer trails…new tracks? No..old ones, not good enough for pictures. The Scenery takes on an open view now of water and islands.
The Cascade Mt. range can be seen with it’s snow capped peaks, brilliant in the morning light. A chase boat chases…what? you will see…soon.
A team of women rowers. If you listen carefully you can hear them calling out rowing orders…and a bit of chat.
Phoebe is off her leash now but is concerned and comes to me to tell me ..“Lets Go!” look at the day!
Munchie and Phoebe say this is so fun..Look! We have already run to the touching tree! and you have not even started!
Sofie is on a leash for this walk, she has a bad hip and wears herself out too quickly with running with her nose to the ground and has had to be carried home more than once.
Small animals live in holes on this bluff…Eagles, Red Tail Hawks, Crows and SeaGulls soar above such areas hunting their prey.
The bluff is in transistion always..sluffing off and growing toward the sea again..
These vines have caught the slide this time and are holding it off the trail…thank you Blackberry Bushes…good job!
Rose Hips from our wild Nootka Roses grow on the bluff as well..Red Rose Hips are vibrant in the sun.
This part of the bluff will slide before winter is over..not sure what will catch this part.
Maybe these Oregon grapes…
Oh cannot believe these California poppies are still blooming..and they are not tattered to shreds..amazing!
Phoebe just flushed this Dove out of the grasses under a tree…
This bright star was blooming right at the waters edge as well..not sure what it is but it was a glory to see.
Have you ever seen Sand Pipers waiting for sand? Well now you have..
We have taken off on another path now these are some fall colors on our way to to the marsh.
Do you see him..he is perfectly camouflaged..a Coyote..looking at us curiously.
Another form of Oregon grape…at it’s red leaf stage along our pathway.
Of course this boat in dry dock is sniffed as we walk by..and make a turn to the right to go into the marsh.
We have stepped into a dip into the marsh off the trail and here we see a bit of the water where all manner of duck will be in the spring.
We have stepped up on to the trail and are heading back toward home..the dogs are happy leading the way still..the mill in the far back is a paper mill..not my favorite subject to photograph, but it is there and I want to show you the bluff and the marsh from this angle…my home sits back from the edge by about 150-200 ft..you cannot see it from here.
Here we must stop to take this picture of all the lovely fall colors of the marsh in this light…
Oh! Hellooo! Little Blanket Flower, you are a brave one too!
She’s done it again…Phoebe has rousted this little fellow out of his sleep and he is thinking “what am I doing out in all this light?”
Shore birds tussling over which rock is who’s seems to be the start of their day…oh my what a racket!
Well! We are just going to fly off to some other rocks then!
A tree lupin is working on a late bloom…
Yarrow..sitting small for the winter, huddles in with tree lupin against the wind.
This is the Sail Boat Adventurous. It is taking groups of teens out on sailing classes for part of their high school curriculum here.
This Eagle nest is not really in use right now..but this eagle, can you see him? has decided it is a good roosting spot. It may be where he was hatched.
Well he has tired of me taking this photo so has flown off in the fog…
We are getting close to our trail through the forest again.. this bicylist has passed us by..can you see the Olympic Mt.s to the West with the fall colors and the snowy peaks as a backdrop…?
All of the dogs have a quick run about before heading up the trail.
Of course once Sofie is leashed again, Phoebe and Munchie must have a real race! You would never know Phoebe is 14 and Munchie is a little over 1.
Here we are at the top of the forest trail…if you look very hard you can see at the very top of the road..is the edge of my garage…it is the white bit there a little to the left of middle.
Loveliness in the sky..these berries caught my eye…
They belong to this tree in my neighbors front lawn..after researching with Greenthumb..we believe it is a Siberian Crab Apple.
Head count….YES! we are all here..and all in one piece.
I hope you enjoyed our walk here in the Pacific Northwest of Washington State.
One last photo taken from my home. Mt. Tahoma…or as some call it..Mt. Rainier..

Wonderful photos and thoroughly enjoyed the walk! We visited Canada in 2000 - Banff area and Mounts Rundle and Sulphur. We keep promising ourselves we will return, but I think we need to win a small lottery or tighten our belts in order to save up - not too much chance of getting more cash as pensioners!
14 Nov, 2009
Caroline you live in a wonderful part of the world, I've really enjoyed walking with you ans your 'Buddies' It would suit us perfectly as it's simply 'what we do' Barnaby would also like it. What did your buddies do when they confronted the coyote?
14 Nov, 2009
What a wonderful trip Cat...I really enjoyed that enormously.
My son who lives in Calgary has just been to visit me and was showing me his slides of his most recent climbing trip last month when he climbed Mt Rainier and Mt Baker......so to see this part of the country with you was an added thrill....many thanks for that . How wonderful to have such great countryside on your doorstep - no wonder your dogs love it so much.....doggie heaven indeed!!

What a nice thing to wake up to! Such dear compliments from so many!
Nariz..thank you..I am so glad you have been to Banff..I have been there as well..it was so gorgeous there! It is not a terribly long trip from here..but we always took 2 days by car and camping to make the trip...have been in the area twice. Would love to go again..I think Gardeningfriend should see it when he comes for visit :o)
Heron...Thank you...yes, your dogs would absolutely love it here...as to the coyote..it was a pretty good distance away and sitting quietly as coyotes do..they are so intelligent..they will watch for days from a certain hiding spot to learn the pattern of its prey..my dogs did not see him...and I was glad to get the shot, forever greatful to my little camera with the wonderful ability to do long shots and close up as well..and that I even spotted him..lol..and that they never got his scent..
Alz..Thank you..and you must visit your son soon! You could come here and visit! Calgary is not so far from here.. ;o) ..glad you enjoyed.
Thank you Pips!..Have so much fun taking the walks and the photo's..and now get the joy of sharing it with all of you ..it is such a pleasure!

14 Nov, 2009
Sandra..glad you took some time out of your gardening and planting to come along! Thankyou! xx ~Cat
14 Nov, 2009
Wow!! Thank you! What fantastic sights! The raccoon was gorgeous! I always thought Coyotes would be ugly, but he's beautiful!
14 Nov, 2009
..thanks Marie...The Coyote was particularly beautiful in the way he was sitting and contemplating..and I could not really see him that clearly until I had uploaded my photo onto my computer..I was stunned and very happy to have gotten this shot..I want to frame it and put it up on my wall..lol!
The raccoon & the dove were also such welcome surprises, thanks to my dear little Phoebe..her Besenji & Sheba bloodlines truly show in her flushing abilities..she is so good at it..and so quiet they are taken totally by surprise..but she never would offer to harm them..she loves everything..lol..and is so curious. Just says "Hello..wanna play?...wait! ..where ya..going..?"
14 Nov, 2009
Lol! He was probably as bemused as you were! I'd love to see them for real!
I cant believe how beautiful he was, the raccoon too!
Phoebe sounds like fun to have around!!
14 Nov, 2009
Between the coyote and the deer around here..I am not sure which is the most abundant sometimes..the deer come out into the open much more often..although I have stood watching out my living room window and seen a coyote running down the neighbors drive..they are very hard on our cat population..We have to be cautious letting our kitties outside. It is man & pet living with nature here and we have to respect them as they were here first and we have to protect our little furbabes too....It is a fine respectful line we walk between one another. I broke out in a run just before Phoebe flushed the dove..I was watching an Eagle soaring above us on the trail, I had my camera focused on it when it began to lower it's talons to drop like a rock, the way they do when they are going after something..I thought,"Oh no, the dogs are that direction!"..just then Phoebe lead the others into the brush under a tree and the Eagle lifted it's talons and flew on..then the dove fluttered up into the tree and Phoebe and the others came out to look at it with me..I was so relieved..it may have had it's eye on the dove rather than the dogs..but I was very prepared to do battle! LOL..I had called to Phoebe but she was more interested in the dove..and that was all for the best.. :o)
14 Nov, 2009
Whew! Close call. Yes, beautiful but deadly!!
14 Nov, 2009
That must have been very frightening Cat.....we don't really have that face-to-face sort of confrontation here in the UK... the worst being a buzzard who nearly took a young pet lamb from a friend's front lawn last summer. If she hadn't gone out at that moment - nobody would have known what happened. Nature - red in tooth and claw right enough .....but to see your own pets threatened....that is the stuff of nightmares.
14 Nov, 2009
Yes Alz it is something to be aware for sure...but really most any of these wild animals..only eat when they are hungry..they do not kill out of anything but natural instincts of survival. We do the same.. :o) There are lots of small animals,, birds, mice etc.ducks and fish in the salty waters close by...I have a hard time thinking that my dogs were really all that threatened..but of course it was my first thought..lol..
14 Nov, 2009
Brilliant blog fancy living beside all that beauty, the coyote takes your breath away also seeing the eagle in the nest and a racoon. The dogs must love it I know I would. Thanks for letting me share your walk looking forward to the next one.
14 Nov, 2009
I am looking forward to it too, Mavis.. Thank you! :o)
14 Nov, 2009
Ahhh! Cat you have a camera similar to mine then? Mine is a Canon 300DSLR and I have a 300mm zoom lens.
14 Nov, 2009
☺ ❤ ❦ ✿ ☯ ❀ eh? What's that in english?
Mine is just idiot proof (well nearly!)
14 Nov, 2009
Marie don't you mean Scottish? hehe it means its a BIG camera instead of a wee sleekit sma' ane.
15 Nov, 2009
Bob..mine was gifted to me about 5 years ago it is a Kodak with a Schneider-KREUZNACH VARIGON 38-380mm lens..it is a small camera really not a big lug to carry around..I can put it in my coat pocket..the lens just scoots out at the touch of a button..but it was picked specifically for the lens by someone who knew their lenses well. :o) ..not me! LOL..and Marie..mine is pretty idiot proof too.
15 Nov, 2009
A beautiful walk. I felt like I had gone into the warm lands again! Fantastic shots, that coyote, Mt Rainier, and the Olympic range over the water. You do live in a wonderful spot, away from the hubbub it looks too. It is very in touch with the natural world there, a real blessing. Well written blog to, I just walked along.
15 Nov, 2009
This blog is getting 'nail-biting' the very thought of your dog being snatched by an eagle is horrifying. I suppose dogs are like children, there are always perils out there. Here we worry more about them being stolen, whether to be sold or held for ransom.
Bobg, you must have a steady hand or a good tripod, I have problems with my 18-200 Nikon. I've not long been into photography and still know little about my camera let alone the rest but it's a nice hobby.
15 Nov, 2009
GT...I am so glad you came on the walk! I knew you would enjoy it. :o) I like being out of the hub-bub have never lived in any other environment than this. The out of doors is very much home to me, where ever I am.
Heron..living in the moment and being aware is key to living in this natural world as GT puts it.
As to photography..I cannot remember a time since my parents gave me a camera for high school graduation that I have not had a camera with me. This is why my late husband found the camera I have now for me..he knew I carried one with me always..he did a super job finding this one! I rarely go out the door without it. ..he was the one who had the super duper one with all the extra lenses..tripods and all that. When it developed a problem so he was not able to use it anymore, he ended up buying another like mine for himself. I do have a walking stick with a knob on the top that comes off. You screw the top off and screw the camera onto that if you do need help steadying...lol..I have too many dogs with me for that tho, so do not use it unless I am on my own or just with Phoebe or one of my daughters.
15 Nov, 2009
That's cunning Catfish, for a moment I thought you were going to say that you'd got a measure or two of something strong to drink in your walking stick. What a clever idea to fix the camera to it. " Living in the moment and being aware" sums it up nicely.
15 Nov, 2009
Lovely blog nature in harmony with the plants and animals.Great story and pics.
15 Nov, 2009
LOL..Heron ..no if I had something strong to drink in there..how would I stay aware!
Thank you Rkalyan....I am so happy you found it! Since you are new and I have not had a chance to say it ..Welcome to GOY...wonderful to have you here! :o) ~Cat
15 Nov, 2009
Bobg...just a note..I have discovered with the help of a friend that I gave some mis-info on the camera used on the coyote picture. I keep certain photos all lumped together in one folder for walks and wildlife. It did not dawn on me that the coyote picture may have been taken with a different camera until I decided to check it closer..I actually used a Kodak again but it was DC240 with a zoom lens that went between 39-117mm..so we were closer to this coyote after all..I remember the walk and the dogs were on leashes ..my husband was with me.. he spotted Mr. Wiley Coyote..tapped me on the shoulder and slowly pointed as he had the dogs and I had the camera ..I saw it as well and snapped off the photo..it was very a pleasant surprise that it turned out..
Thank you for asking this question Bob..it was a pleasant memory to walk back through... ~Cat

Just nominated this for Goypedia!
18 Nov, 2009
Cat! Nice blog. I remember taking part of this walk with you and my brother years ago. I was impressed then and your pictures do it justice. We didn't see coyotes or racoons that day, but the eagles, gulls, muskrat, harbor seal (? I think) deer, blue heron and the gorgeous mountains greeted us. These pictures make me want to walk that way again. Sisty
18 Nov, 2009
Awwww Marie..thank you!
Weeds...You *know* how much I would adore having that walk with you again too!...lol..we could watch out the living room window for your coyote and put out kitten chow and catch a few raccons..lol..if that would help, if we don't see any on our walk... :o)
19 Nov, 2009
:-) followed raccoon tracks in the new snow from the barn to the house and under the back deck. Couldn't find tracks where he came back out, do you think we have a new pet? The kitties aren't spooky when they go out so he must have left after the snow melted. My neighbor, the one just at the brink of the woods, "thinks" she saw a cougar a couple of days ago...but then, she "thinks" she sees lots of things. :-)
19 Nov, 2009
LOL..That neighbor of yours! Yes you can always tell a racoon track...the dogs love to follow them on our walks...I think one was most likely here last night as the wind blew over some ladders I had by my garbage cans and.. oh my.. Sofie found it in the dark this morning..I will have my work cut out for me when it gets light...I have another blog Sisty..it is called "Gardening in this Weather!"...

Ermm excuse me for interupting but this is an emergency. I have been looking at the rowing photo. Actually it looks as though they are not rowing but looking at people in the water. I can hear someone shouting help whilst the women have a chat about it.
24 Nov, 2009
What's wrong with the rowing photo, Shakespeare?
25 Nov, 2009
Marie or not to be - To drown or not to drown that is the rowing photo question.
25 Nov, 2009
There ARE people in the water..oh my! I must call the coast guard this minute!!!
What are all those lady rowers chatting about..they should be sending in the chase boat...Oh Lord have mercy..thank goodness for your sharp eye and keen hearing GF!
oh GF...that chatter...? The Coast Guard just let me know.... it is a flock of gulls...oh dear..just their silly gull heads bobbing around over a herring ball.
mmmmm...Marie...we are in for it now.....
25 Nov, 2009
That GF, certainly has an imagination doesn't he? Shhhh, don't tell him I said that.
25 Nov, 2009
I know I've come in lat Cat but I recon this is the best time because I can read all the comments and extentions to your story. Fantabulous is all I can say.
Everyone say's to me that I should write a book about all my exploits so I'm passing that idea on to you because I recon your stories are worthy of one.

Thank you Tanny...I have had many things tell me to get back at my writing lately. I have written a lot since I was young..never went anywhere without a pen and pad..great therapy....but then lost the habit while I ran my businesses for 15 years and was in a very happy marriage. I did some journaling in the years of marriage but was so busy never really got into it like I wanted. Now I am a widow and have some time to go back into that space again..I may give it a try. I am trying to think of how to go about what to write about and how it would serve the world in general. I have had a very varied and interesting life as lives go, riding on the flow does that. I decided at some point that resistence was futile and just hung on and rode. It seemed that holding on was the only thing I really knew how to do!...Life and living is such a great teacher, I am glad for the ride, now I must ride again, the tide is coming in! :o)
29 Nov, 2009
You just ride on, Cat!! :~))
29 Nov, 2009
Thank you Marie... :o) I shall!
lost my oars long ago.....
29 Nov, 2009
Dont think I ever had any!! :~))

Thank you so much for the tour - and all those beautiful photos! How amazing to see eagles and coyotes when you're out with the dogs!
It was quite moving for me - my uncle and aunt lived in this area for years. My mum went out to visit them - and talked so much about Mt. Rainier and the other mountains in the range!
