We were told many years ago that if you wanted to know whether a mushroom was safe to eat visit your local chemist and he would advise you, well this year we saw these posters in a chemist in Avranches….pity we didn’t have any on us at the time…..

It's great isn't it? The French are all out there in the ditches and the woods collecting mushrooms. It has to be done first thing in the morning, though!
I did it once and took the basket to my elderly neighbour...she's an expert in foraging...when she'd thrown away all the 'inedible' ones - I was left with two! :)

LoL! Yes those little worms travel fast don't they!

Thanks all, I agree the posters are a pleasure to look at, the chemist over in France are marvellous, most speak excellent English and able to treat most minor ailments, and I love the way the shops smell, so classy.

What a sensible idea! I must admit the French beat us hands down in practical common sense! And they dont wait for officials to tell them what to do and not to do..they just do it!

How right you are Tet...

Im not overly fond of the French race (had a nasty experience in Paris once), especially as they just knocked us out of the Rugby World Cup! Still, they cant play cricket thank goodness, bad enough with the Aussies! lol!

What a brilliant idea I haven't come across that in France , I wish they did it here I would like to be able to go through the woods picking mushrooms like they do at River Cottage and then going home to make a nice omelette with them .

Amy I read about this practice in many of the books about life in France, (when we were hoping to live over there) just picturing you skipping through the forest with your basket crammed with mushrooms lol
Tet do tell what happened? we have only had good experiences thank goodness........

Ken and I went to Paris (before we were wed! tut!tut!) and we were in a cafe/bar and I asked for what the person before me had..it was cheesecake and I didnt know the french for it, tho my french was quite good at the time. The chap behind the bar slapped some cream on a plate (sans cheesecake) and pretended he didnt understand me..however as I hadnt mentioned the work cream he obviously did! We had a couple of experiences like that where the french were really rude when we spoke in their language..like "stupid English do they really think they are speaking french!" Also Ken was accosted by a big, hairy-handed "female" in a bar and we had to exit sharpish lol!

LOL.. I think we have been lucky the only time anyone was nasty to me was when I had been into a Boulangerie to buy some bread and cakes, I paid and went outside my OH spotted something he fancied so went back inside .. I waited a min.and then went back in to see what he was buying when the 'Lady' seeing my paper bag of goodies obviously thought I had helped myself and was demanding that I pay, arms waving round like a windmill , I couldn't get through to her that I had paid ,in the end I just walked out , I never go back into a shop with bought goods now ....

I shall be on the look out in future Angela , I often do try mushrooms that we have picked , a friend of mine has a laugh because when we eat something like that I always leave a note on the kitchen table before we go to bed so that whoever finds us will know LOL...

Oh Amy, what are yer like? Never wouldve thought of doing that! Good one lol!
11 Oct, 2011
Amy I think you have been watching too many Midsummer Murders lol
12 Oct, 2011
LOL .. if we are out walking and I spot a good looking mushroom my OH instantly looks at me and says you're not trying that out on me ! LOL.....
12 Oct, 2011
He might think you are trying to get rid of him!!
12 Oct, 2011

Wow! That just sums up the difference between the UK and France doesn't it. Here we are too scared to eat ANY wild mushrooms just incase, and only the experts harvest them. Over there....just get out there, pick them, consult the poster in your local Chemist and.....enjoy with a large glass of red wine and lots of garlic! lol :) They are great posters too...very attractive!
