Armed with a large cup of coffee and a shortbread biscuit, I settled down for my 1 hours bird watch……..made sure the tables had plenty of food, the water defrosted in the birdbaths, brown bread crumbled on the lawn………here we go.
And after 1 hour, what did I see 5 blackbirds, 1 blue tit and a couple of collared doves, and a mistle thrush…..not a great deal was it? lots of birds flew OVER the garden but that does not count….still I tried
Do you think I could add these they are birds but just not feathered ones!!!
Perhaps better luck next year……….

I have counted them for a number of years and felt this year there were much fewer birds about -- especially small ones like finches and linnets etc.

Pamg I have never seen a linnet and we seem to get hardly any finches, our neighbour who is a keen birder ( lives over the road), he puts lots of different food out and attracts a huge variety of birds, I think all the birds were at his place!!
Healerwitch glad you liked it........;*))
Lol TT and Clarice...
Sewingkilla our youngest daughter bought them for hubby for Christmas, would like to put some ivy in them, what do you think?

we've got hawthorn/mixed hedge around a field and used to have a lot more linnets and yellowhammers than now but although there are stables across the road there is no arable farming which may be the reason -- I do leave nettles, thistle and teasles for the goldfinches ( thats my excuse!) and they are just beautiful

I haven't been able to sit for an hour, but I have been down the garden several times, and I have been looking from the kitchen living room and conservatory - not one single solitary bird ! - Not one !

Those swans are beautiful. Last year I had nil points for my birdwatch as there was torrential rain the whole day! I have fared better this year but the long-tailed tits and goldfinches failed to come during the allotted time!! Can someone tell me how to count starlings - they just won't stand still!
Enjoyed your blog, DD and I vote to count ALL the birds in your garden :)

Thanks all, Mavis I think 27 is excellent, glad you liked the planters, will look better when planted up properly.

~the RSPB count isn't how many you saw in total over the hour but the maximum number of each type you saw~for instance I had loads of goldfinches coming and going but the maximum was eight together at the same time~ I don't think they make it clear what you have to do~

Arlene I agree it was a little confusing, luckily our birder friend explained to us how to go about it.
4 Feb, 2010
~problem is I think quite a few will have got it wrong which means their results will be out of true~a bit more publicity on what they want would have been helpful!
4 Feb, 2010
Sandra - that could well have been why - maybe it'll allow me to register if I try again?

think you should barbara, let me know if you do :o))

I didn't actually count any birds for an hour but I did see quite a few seagulls swooping down over the grass patch in front of the balcony. But then that is true of most days around 8am! I saw a few Starlings as well as a few other birds during the morning but they are hardly still enogh for you to see them & identify, them let alone count them!
