What a terrifying time you had.Such good news that it had a happy ending.
Was there any damage to the floor?
I never knew you could bath tortoises! And to think I thought they were fairly boring pets!
PS Its good to see you back!

Thank you both. Lots of damage, but we are all ok that's the main thing. A couple of floorboards, skirting, window cill, plus all the tortoise pen. Also lots of smoke damage so various items have been written off. Had specialist cleaners in for 2 days who were brilliant. Now waiting on Insurers regarding redecorating etc. Its all taking longer than usual due ton the lockdown. I just thank God it happened while I was home and not out shopping or walking Millie.

Goodness Gee what a frightening experience. I'm so glad they both survived the ordeal and a big 'Thank You' to the wonderful Firemen. Was it cups of tea all round afterwards?

Gracious Gee, what an adventure they had, your very own bush fire, thank goodness they were cooled down, and fancy the firemen giving them oxygen, that's amazing! I bet those shells can get very hot. So pleased all was ok and everyone is safe and well..X

Well, that's not what you read every day on GoY is it?!! I'm still wondering just how the firemen gave them oxygen ... Gee, I need to know!
So glad you are all safe and sound though ... :o)

Thank you all for your kind comments. I'm a bit hazy about it, Shirley, but the firemen had machines with hose like attachments and tiny masks. The tortoise's heads fit into the mask completely. Jubilee really seemed to like it. I held her and my grandson held Josie. A few days afterwards the fire crew contacted us to see if it was ok to put a piece on their Twitter page as a good news story. They commented at the end that both tortoises were probably a little "shell shocked"! They are mostly retained firemen and one local chap was passing several days later and stopped to check all was ok.

Oh My Goodness Gee, I thought at first it was going to be one of your delightful quirky tales, soon realised it was serious though, gosh you must have had the shock of your life, thank goodness for the firemen and their actions with the tiny masks, doesn't bear thinking about if you had , as you said been out with Millie, even though it sounds like a lot of damage, the consequences could have been so much worse. It was nice of the fireman to call round and check that all was ok, I bet they'll be chatting about Jubilee and Josie for quite some time, a novel experience for them I would think..
I wonder how many other owners use heat lamps and newspaper without realising that could happen Gee, makes you think doesn't it....
I'm so pleased all of you are safe, one can replace objects a lot easier than our beloved pets, xx.

What an amazing story Gee, so frightening, they were so lucky. I had tortoises as a child and as we only had a two up two down house with no garden, they were house tortoises. They did go in the back yard if it was sunny. In the winter they liked to be in the hearth. They never hibernated. I have a photo of me kissing Tommy, poor Billy only had one eye when I was given him by a boy who no longer wanted him. He couldn't eat by himself as he couldn't gauge where the lettuce etc was, so when he opened his mouth to eat I had to put the lettuce in it. :-)

I had tortoises as a child too, Bornagain, all called Toby. Poor things brought over packed like sardines in freezer lorries but we knew nothing of that at the time. My Josie continues to cause problems, she has hurt her leg, pulled some scales off. I followed round the garden and discovered she was trying to force herself through an obelisk and some metal trellis. No matter how many times I tried to rer-route her she returned time and time again. I have now spent several days removing obelisk and numerous plants, adding an extra bit of pathway and shuttering trellis to prevent further injury. I also have had to bandage injury during day to keep it clean. A challenging task 😊

There has never been a story like this one on here before and will probably never be one like it again!
What a terrible shock you had when you realised it was your fire alarm that had gone off and even worse when you realised your pets were at risk. I am so glad that there was a very happy ending to your story.
