WHAT A MESS!

My patio was messy…..

…whatever way you looked at it….

…with bits of grass growing in between the cracks and the slabs wobbly and uneven because of Mighty Mole! So I decided to dig it up….

…watched by two of my critics.

Little ’Un decided to make a run for it while I paused for breath.

Yuk, horrible, thick, heavy grey clay.

At this point I began to wonder why it had seemed such a good idea to begin with.

I tried to dig in the sand which had been used as ‘bedding in’ for the slabs.

Back aching, I suddenly remembered I needed to stand the seat on a couple of slabs. Oh dear, the little foreman’s back again, inspecting every inch.

But I think it’s looking a little better and….

definitely a bit more planting space!

I put some little Pachysandra plants from a divided clump under the seat. Looking better still but the seat was tatty so I gave it a fresh coat of wood stain.

The Verbena Bonariensis seedlings that were growing in the cracks I replanted behind the seat along with a couple of tomato plants.

Much better.

Then I went on to Goy to see if I could find any ideas for more permanent planting. I very soon spotted Amy’s Sundial circle and picked her brains about the plants she had chosen. She is kindly sending me some of her black grass and has given me several other ideas.

And, guess what, my back and legs didn’t ache at all the next day!! And if you believe that you’ll believe anything :)

Congratulations Gee. I hope you had a word with the supervision and told them that it was going to be your way whatever they might of thought. I'm not sure of the conditions it needs but what about Chamomile.

Well done, you've inspired me - I've got some holidays coming up and didnt know what to do with a patch of ground beside my shed but with a bench similar to yours I could make it into a nice seating area - thank you!

Thank you for all your nice comments and encouragement. Hope you enjoy your seating area when you've done it, Genius. Don't work too hard on your holiday though :)

I wont but I did get a good deal at a certain garden centre beginning with Wye**** I got some slabs for £1.79 instead of £2.29!!! Always pleased when you get a bargain - so come next week when it rains you will know its because I've started my new area!!!

Well done, I love a bargain! Is your Wyevale still Wyevale? Strange question but I think our local one has changed hands. New signs have gone up that doesn't say Wyevale - doesn't say anything other than Garden Centre! Good luck with your Ground Force adventure :)
