For Sanbaz.......a few pics of the jugs I used to paint.

San……I remember getting a book out of the library which showed you which brushes to use and what the paint strokes were called. This was in the mid 90s and Ian used to get me enamel ware from auctions and sale-rooms to paint. I used enamel paint on them first, then the same with the flowers, then when they were dry, painted or sprayed them with yacht varnish to seal the colours and make them water tight.
The colours are a bit old hat now, but more delicate ones would be great for today.

This is an old enamel milk jug

A small hingeless chest…thats cos Ian never got round to putting any on it…Lol

Similar design on this one….

The back of the green jug

The blue jug was the first one I did, and the design was taken from an old Georgian painting.

Handle of the tall green jug, don’t look too close, as it’s a bit messy, but fitted the overall look.

I’d love to get going with these again, but the enamel ware is really hard to come by now, maybe another ten years and they’ll be fashionable again….:o)

Were these for a narrow boat Janey? Maybe you could search some boot fairs for them, when it gets warmer that is!

Lovely work there Janey. I hope you find a way of doing some more painting!

2 Dec, 2010

They're brilliant Janey :o)) What a lovely hobby.

2 Dec, 2010

they are fantastic, i love them. i was thinking it was like canal art ~ i would love to learn that. roses and castles isnt it?
will it only work on enamel?? couldnt the same thing work on ordinary jug and then varnish at the end to get that deep shine???

2 Dec, 2010

Maybe you could try painting on terracotta?

2 Dec, 2010

Thanks Sandra and Grandmage...:o) No Grandmage, though it's very similar, and some of the flowers are Roses from canal-boat design. I used to do them as gifts for friends etc, when this sort of decorative stuff was fashionable.

i like that green one best ~ the flowers are beautiful

2 Dec, 2010

I love the little blue one! One each then Sticki?

2 Dec, 2010

yep that sounds fair to me grandmage ~ do you fancy doing tutorials on line janey?

2 Dec, 2010

Aw, thanks Karen and Hywel,...I had been telling San about them....:o) Yes it's Toleware, usually done on tin or enamel, and yes Sticki, the chest is wooden, so you could use it on anything you like really. I watched Kirsties Home made Home last week and they were stencilling onto fabric, that seems to be back in fashion again too. Yes that's an idea Grandmage....it would work with anything really as long as it wasn't too porous.

Lol girls!

wow janey so good, i love this type of thing myself, you have done a great job of them, hope you find something else to paint, have a look on ebay, you never know what you might find, could do plates to janey, they would be lovely as gifts, glad you posted these thanx :o))

Fascinating stuff, Janey, I do like the hinge-less chest! Do you remember when it was fashionable to stencil walls in rooms ? Must be about twelve years ago now, my daughter and her Sixth Form friends did a lovely stencil on our bedroom walls, a house we have sinced move out of. I wonder if the new owners painted over it straight away ... lol !

2 Dec, 2010

i liked the stained glass on the kirsty programme but some things she does i really dont like and cant understand their appeal

These are really good Janey. When we were looking round the antique shops in Leominster during the summer they had a garden saw in one of the shops painted exactly like this it was priced at £94.

2 Dec, 2010

ooooooooooooooo these are lovely janey .... u must do more !!!!

2 Dec, 2010

Janey, you have a lovely eye for painting your jugs..they are beautiful.

As these fashions go....these kind of designs will come around again although I wouldn't hesitate to have one on display in my home....don't follow the "in" things much. Thanks for sharing your painting with us.

They do look like the canal designs - we walk by the Taunton to Bridgwater Canal in the summer, and they sell jugs and mugs etc very like yours in the little cafe there.

They're lovely! :-)

Pleased you like them San....I didn't think about Ebay....I'll have a look tomorrow...really fancy doing another one...:o)

Ooh yes, the stained glass is something I really want to have a go at Grandmage...Ian has made a couple of windows over the years, but I was too busy then, just liked the final result..Lol.

Yes, I was like your daughter, Shirley, if it stayed still, it got stencilled...Lol. I remember we had a flush door in our bathroom, and I panelled it and stencilled grapes and vines down the middle, on the outside.

I know what you mean Sticki, I really didn't think those hessian curtains would work, but I did like them hung up, even though they looked creased...Lol

Thank you Stroller and Cristina, ooh now £94 is certainly an incentive...:o))

Thanks Jacque......these do suit my cottage, I must admit, and I've trundled them from house to house these last few years, so a little bit worse for wear now!

2 Dec, 2010

Glad you like them Barbara, yes the tinware designs do originate from canal boats....and Romany caravans were decorated very similarly....people in those days couldn't afford ornaments or have room for them , so they painted their household items for decoration. Now all I need girls is an outlet!!....:o))

Lovely, Janey, you have talent!

2 Dec, 2010

Fantastic looking jugs. I´d love to be able to do anything like that but I´m absolutly hopeless at anything artistic, painting, drawing etc.

3 Dec, 2010

They're lovely Janey. Well done. You are talented!!

3 Dec, 2010

Fantastic Janey, I love enamel ware. The artwork reminds me of how they paint the canal boats.

They all look great Janey, you are talented. What about buckets, you could make holes in the bottom and fill with plants. Maybe garden centres would buy them..you could be rich beyond your wildest dreams. In fact we could become partners, with my business contacts...ahem... there'd be no problem lol:-)

1 Jan, 2011
