My Favourite Things.

I was busy searching through a drawer the other day, and came across this poem, sent to me by my Aunt Mavis, when we lived away. She was telling me about her aches and pains, and I laughed when I read this and thought how awful it must be when you get older and your health problems are so important. Reading it now, it’s not quite so funny….Lol! I can relate to lots on here….but then again I don’t feel so bad!!….:o))

“My favourite Things”

Rennies and nose drops and needles for knitting,
Walkers and handrails and new dental fittings,
Bundles of magazines tied up in strings,
These are a few of my favourite things.

Cadillacs and cataracts, hearing aids and glasses,
Steradent, Fixodent, and dentures in glasses,
Pacemakers, golf carts and porches with swings,
These are a few of my favourite things.

When the pipes leak, when the bones creak,
When the knees get bad,
I simply remember my favourite things,
And then I don’t feel so sad.

Hot tea and crumpets, and corn pads for bunions,
No spicy hot food or meals cooked with onions,
Bathrobes and heat pads, and hot meals they bring,
These are a few of my favourite things.

Back pains, confused brains, and no fear of sinning,
Thin bones and fractures and hair that is thinning,
And we won’t mention our short, shrunken frames
When we remember our favourite things.

When the joints ache, when the hips break,
When the eyes grow dim
Then I remember the great life I’ve had-
AND THEN I DON’T FEEL SO BAD.

Hope it gave you a laugh…that is if you’ve got your teeth in of course….Lol!!

17 Nov, 2010

That was good :o))

Your last remark reminded me of when I was a social worker, and we took some blind people to an eisteddfod.
One of our men went up on the stage to sing, and half way through the song his false teeth fell out, and landed on the stage lol.

Eventhough the audience was made up of mostly blind people they all managed to see that, and roared with laughter at the sight of him groaping about on the stage for his teeth, while the music played on :o)

In the end I went and picked them up for him ... Ug !
He put them back in and carried on singing lol

Thanks everyone...it's good to have a laugh even at ourselves isn't it....:o))
Ooh Hywel...that is so funny!! I can just picture you sat there thinking....hurry up and find them for G's sake! Yeuk...fancy having to pick them up...and then he put them in, covered in bits etc....Lol!! Me and Ian howled at it!

This reminded Ian of when his Dad was young.....he was on holiday in the Isle of Man and was enjoying an afternoon in the sea, though he couldn't swim. Apparently a huge wave came and made him gasp, and out popped his top set, which slowly blip blipped to the bottom and were lost! Imagine that!

And my Dad, when we were young we often played games on a big field near us after tea. This one time, my Uncle Charlie and Aunt Mavis came and we all enjoyed a good game of cricket. Dad was fielding and after running to catch the ball, he leapt up and grabbed it and his top set flew out....Lol. We were in stitches, but Uncle Charlie was very cross with us kids for laughing..... and I remember we just couldn't stop, we laughed so much that it was painful!!....Lol

lol janey brilliant catch haahha

18 Nov, 2010

Oh Janey, isn't it hilarious to remember back to those years sometimes. I often end up in stitches when I think back and remember some of the things that happened lol. It's great that we have such memories :D

24 Nov, 2010

Pleased you enjoyed it girls...:o)) Read it to myMum ....then she said...I didn't hear half of that you don't talk loud enough!....Lol!

24 Nov, 2010

Thanks Janey, for making us smile . . . what a great poem. (I've started wearing purple and learning to knit, but don't tell anyone!) Just shows that what you need most when "old" is a GSOH. :))

24 Nov, 2010

Purple is THE colour this winter Sheila and knitting too is very trendy! I used to knit a lot, found it really therapeutic, years ago....thing is now it's more expensive to make things then just buying them!....:o(( Yes, I agree....a good laugh woks wonders......:o)

24 Nov, 2010

Only just found this, you're a WOW Janey, Thanks for making me laugh so. And who would have thought that the inspiration for the film' Jaws' came from the Isle of Man !

24 Nov, 2010

Ha...ha Ron......look well if someone was fishing later, and hooked them up!.....:o))

24 Nov, 2010

Mention of the colour purple has brought back a childhood memory from the 60's, the time of Biba clothing when all things purple & mauve were fashionable. Upon a visit to my grandparents house in Brighton, poor Granny was worrying herself silly as the neighbours had hung out their purple sheets on the line! To her, anything but pristine white was sinful. As for purple, well, whatever sort of people were they! Still makes me smile .......

24 Nov, 2010

Oh yes...I remember Biba Shirley......in 69 I spent a few weeks in London at my brothers flat, just off the King's Road, it was great, maxi coats and high boots and hot pants, and Here Comes the Sun playing in all the boutiques....ahh the days of your youth....:o)))
He...he....your poor Granny, victorian values still held then didn't they, it's a shame things have swung so much the other way.

24 Nov, 2010

My daughter has often asked why I didn't keep my wedge shoes, black midi-coat with the faux fur trim, halter neck dresses etc. etc. as they would be 'so cool' now! What goes around, comes around I guess........

24 Nov, 2010

"I have been wearing purple with a red hat that doesn't go and doesn't suit me " for ages !:0))

25 Nov, 2010

Ha ha, Val, if you're comfy and warm, who cares? : o ))

26 Nov, 2010

"And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals and say we've no money for butter"

26 Nov, 2010

Yes funny isnt it Val when they say, cant afford ready meals, when for one of those I can cook 3 good meals for the same price!
Janey oh my dear you did take me back, hot pants and cat suits and Harpers Bazaar...Blue Velvet and Venus in Blue Jeans..not that I was ever a Venus! But yes...the days of our youth!!!

27 Nov, 2010

Yep, Shirley, there's only so many fashions you can do for our shapes and lifestyles, I can't believe the 60s look is here again though....I remember making an Op-art dress for Needlework A level....fully lined of course..Lol! Cream tights and clumpy shoes...only suit the young though as most fashion does.

Purple and red Val....very regal! Bet they look great together, I have a dark mauve cardi, which I wore yesterday with red beads....I thought about you and I love them together...:o)) Summer gloves...Lol, can you imagine the faff of getting properly kitted out these days, course there were no computers or tellies, so you would have the time.

Lol Tetrarch, everything seemed new and exciting didn't it...of course the older generation were just adjusting to life after WW2, it must have been very difficult for them, and there we were singing "Let's go to San Fransisco" and
and imagining Woodstock....still that's the generation gap....:o((

27 Nov, 2010

"But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple"

The lines I have been quoting are from a poem by Jenny Joseph called "When I am an old woman I shall wear purple.
Thats how I like to think of myself ;0))

27 Nov, 2010

Lol Val....yes read that one when Stickitoffee mentioned it.....shall look forward to seeing a new avater with you dressed all in purple!...lol

27 Nov, 2010
