New Guidelines

Grows on You is a friendly gardening website and we want to keep it this way. We were recently surprised to find that some think it is OK to ask about illegal substances! We now feel the site will benefit from some guidelines and are proposing the following guidelines from today. Please contact us if you have feedback.
We ask Grows on You members to -
1. Be respectful and tolerant of other members
2. Use common sense and these guidelines when deciding what and what not to post
3. Report content in violation of these guidelines by “flagging” it. This website is policed by all members via the “flag” links found next to content. By clicking on “flag” you are indicating to us (the administrators) that you think content doesn’t meet our guidelines. The process is private and anonymous; the ‘flagged’ member is not told automatically. Once something is flagged we will decide what action to take (sometimes none).
4. Keep most of their contributions (photos and blogs) related to gardening, plants, and nature. Note: Most does not mean All
5. Help develop the Questions section into a valuable resource by keeping questions strictly gardening related
6. Protect privacy on this open to the public website
7. Avoid discussions about website improvements and administrator actions on the main website. All queries and suggestions must come via the “contact us” link at the bottom of every page
8. Not enter into any Should I Stay/ Should I Go or similar discussions
9. Not try to sell anything
10. Not post any inappropriate content including but not limited to
a) Discussions about illegal or prescribed drugs including cannabis in any form. b) Nudity and sexual references c) Commercial content in blogs, questions and photos including links for search engine optimisation purposes d) Swearing e) Derogatory comments (including slurs based on race, religion, gender, sexual preference, or political affiliation) f) Personal threats or harassment g) Spam11. Only post photos and content that they own the Copyright to or is in the public domain
These guidelines are new to us too so let us see how they go; we reserve the right to revise them in the future.
We know some of you will have concerns and questions about these new guidelines. If you do have anything you’d like to ask, please get in touch via the contact us button found at the bottom of every page and we’ll get back to you.
We would like to say that we are extremely proud with the way the community has grown so far. These guidelines will hopefully help you and us have a fantastic 2009! We wish you all a very merry Christmas.
Ajay and Peter

Great guidelines, if it helps this site return to the relaxed, friendly forum it has been until recently then they will be a positive addition. Let's just hope that members don't quote them out of context and obsess about picture content and acknowledging replies, etc and end up abusing things.
Merry Christmas to all and well done Peter and Ajay who have made a stirling attempt to solve the recent negative feeling on the site.

Good common sense guidelines Peter and Ajay. A pity they have to be spelled out but, as a couple of people have said above, GoY is now really too wide reaching to manage without.
A Merry Christmas and a happy, peaceful and prosperous 2009 from me and mine to all of you and yours.
John.

21 Dec, 2008
oh i do hope not Gilli lol - i think as everyone has said, common sense is needed.
21 Dec, 2008
Common sense prevails.... this is an excellent site, sometimes sad, more times very uplifting, so lovely to be in touch with people from all walks of life, from all over the world, with gardens big and small, just one big happy family, so let us keep it that way please.
Wishing Peter and Ajay a very Happy Christmas....you are both doing a grand job.......keep digging!!!!!!

Thank you Peter & Ajay for doing such a caring and efficient job of keeping it the best there is in the world! I love the friends I have made and look forward to all the comments and input from all. I too wonder though... what about GF does he get off now without showing us what he really looks like?? lol

Hi Ajay, obviously I wasn't around when you wrote this blog and missed the unpleasantness that caused it but I was just wondering what you thought of the GoY site now and how your guidelines have changed it?
I do love this site and was very pleased that you let me come back after my 'dummy throwing' fit.
Thanks from me for keeping this site such a fun place to be, as someone else recently said "its a grown up Facebook"
Cheers........Ian
PS. Can I be the first to wish you a happy christmas for 2009 Lol :-))
29 Jul, 2009
Thanks Ian. You are definitely the first to wish me happy christmas this year! Regarding your question I have to say they aren't really "our guidelines" - they evolved from what the community wanted. The flagging system is part of that too and allows the community of members to report anything against the guidelines. I think it is working well.
29 Jul, 2009
It certainly is a happy friendly site without the usual one-upmanship that you can find at other sites. Thanks for that and keep up the brill. work. :-))

GoY is a very good group, and I appreciate the wisdom, time and thought you and Peter have invested in this necessary blog.
Let's hope your advice allows the group to run smoothly.
Thanks again for all this useful information.
