Allotment - Part 10

Its been a while since I updated you on progress “down the lottie”..!!
Its strange seeing the beds gradually empty….However….we are still enjoying produce……picked about a pound of strawberries today….and pulled a couple of summer swedes. The runner/climbing.french beans are all finished….nicely tucked up in the freezer along with surplus cabbage which I shredded and blanched. The potatoes are all lifted and stored in sacks in the garage….the onions are all dried and will be stored in a similar fashion.
The tomatoes were a bit of a disaster this year…..the plants, which I bought in this year, have been disappointing…but they were bought late in the season…..I sense a few jars of pickle being made!!!…..During the gale force winds over the bank holiday weekend, the greenhouse tried to do a “Mary Poppins” and fly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…fortunately my lottie neighbour tied it to the fence and we were able to rescue it.
The dahlias are flowering like mad and it has been pleasant to be able to give friends the odd bunch or two.
I am now weeding and raking over the beds ready for the winter months. I am going to plant some spring cabbage, cauli and broccoli and some onion sets for overwintering….the remaining beds will be sown with green manure and dug in in the spring…..this will add valuable nigrogen to the land ready for planting crops again. Its all “go” isn’t it.?
We are hoping to erect a polytunnel ready for next year. Perhaps I will find one when we visit Harrogate Flower Show next weekend..:-))

What a productive plot you have had, Alice, French Beans in the freezer sounds good to me. I think many Tomato growers will be disappointed this year, lack of sunshine I guess ? Keep an eye on the stored spuds, we lost a fair few one year as didn't check regularly and they'd gone to 'mush' in places !
