Garlic

Also known as Russian Penicillin

Plant Folklore: Carried by Odysseus to prevent him from being turned into a pig.
Deified by the ancient Egyptians. Slaves were given garlic daily to keep them healthy. A Roman proverb says “One must be very suspicious of anyone who does not eat garlic”…
Eat before a nocturnal journey and the foul smell from belching will keep away evil spirits!!
Greek athletes and soldiers would take large doses before competition or combat.
Used in WW1 by the Russians to prevent wound infection, hence Russian penicillin.
Pliny lists 61 ailments which can be treated with garlic. Garlic in the bloodstream repels mosquitoes and this, probably, explains its use to repel vampires.
Pregnant women eating garlic will not smell of it if they are carrying a girl.
It is lucky to dream that there is garlic in the house. Dreaming about garlic means that you are about to discover some secret.
According to Islam, when Satan left the Garden of Eden, garlic grew where he placed his left foot, and onion where he placed his right foot.
Many religions forbad its consumption, especially by holy men, because of its aphrodisiac properties.
Raw garlic wrapped in muslin and pinned to an undergarment, keeps away colds. On St Andrews Eve…29 November (this Sunday) is a particularly busy time for vampires so garlic should be rubbed on all doors and windows, in the shape of a cross, and on all farm animals too…..you have been warned!!!

Factual info: Many of garlic’s traditional properties are now being proved by science. Some suggestion that vampires were rabies sufferers who became hypersensitive in the later stages of the disease and cannot tolerate strong light or the strong smell of garlic.

Couldn’t find a pic of a plant in flower

Is it good for the blood as well ??

I love it too and so I planted some earlier in the year. What happened to it I do not know. I remember where it was planted, but no sign. As the squirrels and foxes seem to dig up everything here maybe they enjoy a crunchy garlic clove, who knows.

excellent for the bloood MB!....my OH does not like garlic very much...most folk use to much...its meant to be a flavouring not a "blast".....home grown is vastly better than the "sweaty feet" stuff you get at the supermarket. I have on occasions used it and OH did not know it was there....and he has a very good sense of smell/taste....so just goes to show...doesn't it!!!
Thanks for the garlic kisses Di.......I'll take your word for it....lol.....
