Open Garden Day

Last Sunday I opened my garden to the village from 11-3 to raise money for Severn Hospice. Despite the torrential rain in the run up I managed to get the garden in a presentable state! I was one of 6 gardens that opened as part of a garden trail, only organised a month ago! I honestly wasn’t sure how I was going to feel opening my garden to the public and how many visitors to expect. I didn’t do teas & cakes but sold over £20 worth of plants I had dug up. Despite rain on the day I had between 50-55 visitors and we managed to raise £440 all together! Next year we’re hoping to open up a lot more gardens as some visitors were encouraged to open their garden for next year. And oh going back to how I wasn’t sure about all these visitors in my garden, it was wonderful to talk to people about the plants, answer any questions and get compliments! I had a beautiful caterpillar on a plant at the front of a border and whenever there were children visiting I took them to see the caterpillar. Next year I will try and include a fun activity for the children to do with wildlife. Btw my garden was voted most wildlife friendly! 🐝🐞🐛 Didn’t have time to take any photo’s on the day…..

Aw...well done Amsterdam! You did a brilliant job! Pity you had to dig up your plants to sell them!! Lol! Only kidding. But well done. Am so glad you enjoyed it in the end. I understand just how you felt. :)

I love open gardens, to see the variety and ideas of the owners is terrific. What I am not so keen on are the people that go, completely ignore the owner, rush round and dash off. True gardeners will admire the plants and even if not your taste will find something to compliment the owner on, it's only polite to at least speak to the owner! Well done on your opening, sounds as if it went well and you probably got true gardeners, who will go regardless of the rain, rather than the nosy element who aren't true gardeners! Best of luck for next year, sounds as if it will be on-going event now.

Thank you all. It was such an easy way to raise money for Severn hospice. I am already recruiting more gardeners for next year so we can double amount of gardens and hence raise even more money. And the best thing that came out of it is that a local chap who came to visit would like my apples as I struggle to give them away with 4 or more wheel barrows coming off one tree. This is he tells me to add to his mix of apples to make cider with and ofcourse I will get a few bottles myself! Ha,ha! Cheers! 🍺
