Bring Back The Old

Angie....you get to your homepage by clicking on your name that appears near the top right of our page...your username will be underscored there. That will take you to your homepage and then you will find various headings in a row to guide you through your own pages...i.e. News, Photos, Inbox, Outbox, Questions etc.

Your avatar should be showing up alongside your name...it is appearing with your username on any pages I view.

Stick around....it is still early days.

I've no idea what the general consensus is as comment is scattered. Maybe we could have some boxes on the main points to tick.

Good idea Heron,I agree there are mixed reactions,so that may help Ajay to make a decision.I think colour seems to be the main contention.

Colour my main problem, don't like how peoples avatars are displayed when you look at individual photographs though, they are placed over the titles of the pictures and I like to be able to read the titles also. Have now posted a comment to the boys so as not to keep the complaints ongoing on the blog.

Just had another play on the site and found that the avatars only display over the titles when the titles are longer something to do with the size of the print again!!
Maybe smaller print will alter that will let the boys know.

Can't stand the new look, sorry P+A! Can't we have that nice green back again, and I have found at least one button MISSING and the comments are in grey ( I keep thinking I need glasses) and why is the print so big? We don't all have eyesight problems - maybe just a little smaller, so we don't fall victims to "font-shouting"????

It isn't my homepage anymore Whiston, to me the site is now an impersonal gardening site not our 'home' where we meet old gardening friends and make new ones, and we could ask questions ( and answer some) in the knowledge that there is a wealth of experience here waiting to be 'tapped' even in the last couple of days its very noticable that only a few-- often long term members-- feel able to continue--- I almost feel bereft at the loss of a friend :o((((

I have a home page and avatar, but the icy blue colour and bird adverts are very off puting. I also think it is too big. I have to readjust the size everytime I look at GoY, and then readjust it back again to see other sites. Such a nuisance !

The only good thing about it is the photos are bigger and better to see. That's all :o(

You will get used to the new site in time, it is change and not for the better I agree, but we have it and will need to use it if we want to stay in touch and I do.
I do not like the colour, it is cold and unwelcoming, but still people are the same and still will help if I need it. I don't want to lose the contacts I have made, it is great to be able to talk to people with the same interests as I have. I made myself go on last evening and work with all the tabs, though I haven't tried to write a blog yet, hopefully it will not challenge my old brain too much when I do try. It will take time, me more than others, I HATE CHANGE, but see this as yet another challenge for my brain. It has had to work hard in the last few hours, think that is why I hate change, don't like to have to make the brain work, lazy I know, but if we don't work it we lose it as they say and I do not want to lose it!! Lost enough, my figure, my eyesight, my smooth face, my teeth and lots more!! LOL, HOPE YOU ARE LAUGHING NOW. I laughed last night when someone wrote they had still got there sunglasses on and thought it was dark inside. I laughed my socks off. Come on keep smiling, it is good for you.

What I dislike is the loss of something that had style and flair, vibrancy and individuality, in the favour of something mundane and mainstream, lacking in impact, that shouts like a clinician and leaves you feeling violated and exceedingly depressed.

I really am trying to get on with it, and I appreciate all the time and effort P&A have put in. No problems navigating the site, but I'm still hating the screen glare/colours which are giving me eye and headaches. I also miss the different colour background for PMs. It's too easy to miss them.

Dd - yes, the people make the site, but I already know of several who are seriously thinking of leaving. What then?

Hi, I don't like the new site either and don't agree with Oliveoil that were stuck with it, every site can be tweeked and changes made if administrators so wish. I dont like my homepage at all, just my tuppenny's worth.

Absolutely Hywel. You of all people know what beautiful views await you every morning, and all I've got is cow doo-doo and a clinical white with a pastelized blue surround, augmented by a scripted grey - ugh!!! Quite honestly, getting used to something that is sub-standard, lacking in quality and completely devoid of any form of motivation, is just not my cup of tea.
Hold it - that's a good idea - and a Old English marmalade toastie - cheers Hywel - you've cheered me up no end!!! :)

problems I was having so I know they are listening/reading comments. I did not mean we had to put up with everything I know if we complain they will make changes, just don't want everyone to go away. I would be lonely by myself on here. I am off for a cuppa now - tolerant what is that Heron? lol

I've said on another thread that I'm a happy bunny...Ajay has posted they are taking our comments on board and they definitely have the message about the dislike of the colour.

We're all still the same people...still loving gardening...still (I hope) have a sense of humour and we're all here to help one another out. So to me, nothing has changed. I'm sure things will be sorted out to make us happier with the site but it will take a little while. Hang in...it's so worth it. :)

Agree, Whistonlass, couldn't agree more... if for no other reason than to see how it gets tweaked over the next week or two... that's if I can bear the bruising on the bridge of my nose from wearing sunglasses over my readers, lol;-))

I don't see the point in leaving either. It's like sulking - rather childish really.
But honestly this ice colour is very depressing.
I don't find the white glary, but the whole thing is HUGE lol and I have to adjust my screen every time I look at GoY now.

I get bad migrain Hywel so the glare worries me, I don't stay on here for so long now, just pop in and out :-))))

Annella I wish it had that effect on me, as I spend far too much time on here, but the colour is thankfully not a problem, quite uplifting, but then I love blue.
I feel that some members who have hardly used the site should be up in arms about these new and not before time changes.

if its not broken then why try mending it, the boys should have just left it alone, I appreciate they have tried updating GOY for us but personally I think they have down graded it, will be very sad if people start leaving as we do have a great gang on here.

Well I'm not going anywhere... and the only reason I think the text could do with being smaller is cos it then makes a busier page to look at, thus reducing the glare from all that white...

I thank you all for your comments. It seems that most of the regulars are unhappy with the so-called-upgrades as I am.

I see that after I found my blog tab and decided to have a gripe, my page reset its self and I see my avatar again, so to those that can't find their home page, see if you can find the blog tab and write something and your page might reset its self as mine did.
I'm still not liking this big font even though I have one of the latest Mac so its easy to change the font but still it's BIGGGGGG I miss seeing what's on the rest of the page, etc.

To those that said change is good it keeps our brains working, I agree it does but it's only good when the change is for the better and not for the worst, as it is here.
I just can't understand why all these changes! It's like they got some kindergarden kid in to make the changes. There are so many change going on in life right now and the last thing we need to see change in is a place we go to relax and unwind, a place we look forward to, a place that made sense, a place that didn't need change. I found the green colour soothing and the lay out inviting. When I first stumbled across GOY I liked what I saw. If I had found this layout and color I wouldn't have stayed I'd just have moved on. These changes are like seeing one of your best friend suddenly change for the worst and it's a shock!

Anyway I'm running out of time as I have to dash off to an appointment so I catch up with you all later.
In the mean time I will be hoping I come back later to that soothing green.

I know Bamboo, It's just confusing when some people say they have things I don't . Lot's of tweaks have happened today which is good :-))

Have they - I'm only interested in the bright white being softened somehow, personally, so haven't noticed much else. I'm sure it'll all resolve itself...

I know what you mean Angie-- if a friend suddenly dyes their hair very differently and asks you if you like it! takes a bit of getting used to.......

I still think it's too bright but have a smaller screen at home so it's not so bad as in the day. My 'things you have commented on' problem has been sorted today and the pm's..

Don`t like it ...enough said! I find it very bland and impersonal...why can`t the `I spy bird` website be redesigned on the old GOY!!

I do not find the text much different it is not enormous it is just right, in fact I would say it was spot on......am I seeing it differently? I am using a Mac.

Dotty...I notice the larger type when I go to other websites...it takes quite awhile for my eyes to adjust to smaller print (I wear verifocals). I'm not sure whether it would be different sized on your Mac...perhaps someone will.

Whistonlass have just been messing around and I can alter how my page looks with command +or - so that is why my text is virtually the same size as it was before.......and I have the page set up so the text is contained and not spread out to the sides, if it was there would be no blue to look at, do you understand what I mean?

I just got my first Pm since the new look - and I couldn't tell it from the other comments until I looked closely. Quite ridiculous...

Sorry, Dotty....I don't understand :( If I did work it out and altered things on GOY would it affect other websites too? I don't want to do anything to upset my other websites or I will have problems.

Pip.....have you altered your screen to a lighter version? All my pm's are distinct and clearly visible with blue background. My screen makes the pm's in a block of colour.
If it doesn't do this in your inbox you could pm Ajay or Peter for help.

When I went to GOY through the email notice I see my avatar but if I leave that page to go read someone's blog I can't get back to what use to be my home page. It's as well I didn't deleted all the email notices.
I notice in the old fomate the blogs I had read were in a faded colour but on the its just all the same. aheeeeeeee!

Although I see that silly Option box is gone :-) Now for the green back and the old homepage would be fantastic.
I haven't noticed a difference in the size of pics yet.

Have written a blog to try and help everyone with changing their colours and font + font size hope it helps, I have now got a nice sage green background instead of the glary/stark background, don't know yet if it affects other sites but this one is the one I use the most so don't think it will bother me too much. Hope the blog helps you.

Angie.....the option box is still there, and I personally think it is a good idea, and you say you are using a Mac....so am I and the text is perfect, you can change it by going to view, Zoom, Zoom in Zoom out, how difficult is that?
You are being rather negative a lot of these changes had been asked for, so the Boys cannot take all the blame can they?

Apparently I'm not the only one not liking these changes! Not liking something that is crap is not negative it's having an opinion, I have a preference which means I don't like crap.
( Plus I hate the use of the words negative & positive as they are the most overused and over abused words in the english dictionary )

Holy hell - seems everyone has a different problem with this site! Seeing as I don't need sunnies while using the site, I don't think it would be the brightness that is the problem with my PMs. I know a few other members have my problem too.

Thank u Pip. It's good to know I'm not the only one having many problems. Although maybe glad is not the right thing to say. It's quite upsetting as I so enjoyed popping in to GOY to see what's going on and relax for a bit, but now I don't think I'll be bothering as I really don't like what they've done. I don't know about my PMs as I can't find my way around this mess. If I leave one page I can't find my way back. It a bit like a one way street. It's so annoying! As it was so enjoyable and to think I'm rather new to the site and had just mastered my way around it. Now here I am being pushed out because of so-called-upgrades that has given so many a lot to gripe about.

Hi Angie, at the top of every page I go to is in black 'Hi pamg' and in white an' options box,' if I click on my name I get something similar to my home page and if I click the options I get a dropdown box to choose from, such as question, blog photo etc which allows me to do things. hope that helps
I also dislike these so called improvements and find that all I'm doing is trying to keep up with these blogs and not looking at much else or answering many questions as my eyes get tired very quickly and a get a headache across my forehead and back of head, I'll give it a few more days in the hope of improvements pam xxx

Exactly what I have said. The old site had impact euphoria - this site doesn't. Now, it is just the same as all the rest. It really is pointless having a wonderful photo regime when there is no encouragment to get past the opening pages!!!

Angiegarden, not sure why you're having so much difficulty negotiating your way round the site - its not that different from before in terms of travelling around. Can you explain what the problem is, please?

Maybe your Mac is better, Dd. I'm still getting eye ache and headaches after only a few minutes on here, and I haven't got any way of altering the font size or the background colour. I can't get rid of the worst adverts either! The google chrome one makes me feel dizzy and the beefburger one is just dreadful. I'm not happy, either.

I can navigate the site, that's not the problem, and I do like the new sized photos - but that's the only plus point, I'm afraid. I really am trying! I'm still here...at the moment.

Spritz I do agree I said on the original blog by Ajay that the glare & whizzing chrome and flashing burgers gave me a migraine ( not full blown just loss of vision but I was on my own in the Garden Centre) I've pm'd ajay but its really getting me down

My problems as I can tell at this point is.
The lay out
The Colors, First the white with blue border is far to glarey, plus green and blue should never be seen, no color distinction on the rest of the site. It looks amateurish and child like. Who ever thought of it must be colour blind, no doubt it must be a man as more men are colour blind than women.

Hate the adds! Flashing anything is very bad for everyone!!!!!!!!! Young or old. God help people that are epileptic!!!!

The size of font, far too big.

The lack of a home page, I so miss that, it was far more simple.

No distinctive color heading on the different box I can open.

If I choose a box to open then I can't go back to where I was unless I use my computer go back arrow but can't if it's within GOY. How is that an improvement?

There is no highlight on blogs that I have not read, how is that an improvement?

I do not have a way to upload pics. It was so easy b4. How is that an improvement?

Far toooooo much clicking on boxes, I loath when there are so-called-upgrades only to find it takes more moving my curser around and more clicks to get to something I want. How is that an improvement?
All it does is waste my time and ware out my hands quicker, as I'm sure it does others.

I'm sure there are more if I wanted to waste more of my time to figure them out but a monochromatic or next best thing to it isn't at all appealing to my artistic eyes

The only changes I would have asked for b4 would have been to make it easier to upload pics and to have different albums to put them into so one could follow a project as it develops for those that are working on something. Or to show a garden from season to season, but all these so-called-changes to just make room for adds has really done this site a big injustice. I doubt there will be many new comers as this look and layout is just not something that would make anyone say, Oh what is this? This looks nice let me find out more.
That's what I thought when I found it the first time, but now I don't have any interest in it. I might even delete my pics as I don't like the fact that GOY claim them as theirs to do as they want with them. That is sooooooo not right! I feel they opened this forum to people to hook them in just to use them in a sense. If they like our pic them they should ask to use them not claim them and use them as they please without even a complement or a thank you never even mind a fee!!!!!

SpritzHenry= And everyone else that doesn't like the adds if you go down to the end of the page you will see Terms of use & Privicy click on that.
Read, when you find the blue highlighted words, (can't remember at this time ) it says powered by Google or something, but click on it. Google page will open and somewhere on that page you can chose to OPT OUT of adds or chose the ones you like. I don't know if it only applies to this site or all sites. I edit my choices to test it out b4 I opt out altogether. You might find that helpful let me know if you do and if so let others know.

Sorry this is long, hope you were able to read to the end as I think the OPT OUT will help a lot, also if we all do it it's letting Google & GOY know that we really don't want adds It not why we are on here! There are other ways of making money besides bombarding eople with adds.
Was thinking wouldn't it be wonderful if new Tvs came with an add OPT OUT button. Oh I'd be happy with that.

Angie - thank you for trying to help, telling me about the opt-out button. Unfortunately, my lap-top seems to have a problem about 'disabled cookies' and it won't allow me to get rid of the adverts without going into the realms of techie-dom. I can't understand a word of it, and changing settings is beyond me.

I wish I had someone sitting next to me who could sort it out for me...but I haven't.

When it opens, scroll down to where it says Google, see the hight lighted blue press on that & a Google page will open.
Then read, I think I clicked on something in the box on the top right so play around with it. Go in there a few times and see if it makes a difference.

I did that with the ads Angie but I still get them but not personalised any more. I understand and agree completly about the photo's, when joining Goy 18 mths ago I do not remember agreeing to all that I put on here being used anywhere else without specifically asking, my system is linked to others in the business and does not Allow me to send photo's but all my words are on here and I do try to be careful what I say.To me-- in a few short days-- Goy has changed beyond recognition which makes me very sad, nowhere else could I have ever met you, and Pip in Oz,Camellia in Nepal as well as lovely gardening folk in GB and I am loath to lose that connexion

Such a pity about all this mess Pang it saddens me greatly too. It was my little escape from reality now it's changed so much I really don't enjoy it and I'm thinking strongly of removing what I consider my better pics. So many changes going on from his world recession but I just don't understand all the changes on here. It's as if they couldn't afford the other format anymore and had to down grade and add adds to make money. To sad really. They've ruined it!
Your right, where on earth would we have meet so many fellow gardeners if not here. I know I wont be popping in much as I really find the colors very uninviting and so much harder to get around this site now. Plus all those adds!!!! Ahhhhhhhhhhh! It's just not the same is it?

Thank you for your opinion hugs to you as I know how you feel. I so agree, I'm hating it too. I gave up trying to scout around as I find it all so distasteful now. So I don't know where those options are but as far as I could make out, to open anything one has to open one of those kiddy like boxes, I think, with the symbols on them. You know the ones like you see a child draw? The ones with the lack of colour, as if it's half finished or something.
Then when it open you must then work a little harder by going up to the option box and clicking on that, when the drop down bar opens, you must then work your finger even more by scrolling down to chose an option, and open that.......beat me after that because that's where they lost me.

Lady Essex ... to leave a private message or add someone to your favourites
- click on the person's name under their avatar
- when you get to their profile page you'll see a tab that says 'Leave a private message' and another tab that say 'Add to my favourites'.

Angie and Ladyessex, the functions are exactly as they were, just look a bit different - when you've logged in, click on your name at the top, left of the Options box - that takes you to your home page with several tabs at the top - News, Inbox, Outbox, Favourites - the only thing not present is your avatar, but everything else is there. And just the same as before, if you want to send a PM, you click on the individual's avatar and select leave a private message on their page.
Its actually quicker to click on your name (where it says Hi....) than it is to use the Options drop down menu box. Hope that helps. And by the way, you can now save favourite blogs too, under favourites, as well as pics and people.

Hope you're having a pleasant day, even though I know like me your still upset about losing our old friend GOY. It's like having a friend that's had an extreme makeover and you hate it, but know it will be a long time, if ever, until you get use to it, but at the same time her/his personality has changed along with it so you know you've lost something special you can't get back and are in a bit of shoch about the whole thing. Or can we get it back?

Still don't like the big box area on this page it's huge compared to the old, the white, yes it still is white on my computer I've had to adjust the light controls on my computer to turn down the starkness of it, but so happy to see the green is back, two shades of it. NICE!!!!!!
Still doesn't compare to the old though.

I explored the workings of the sit a little bit more last night and somehow found the favorites section, but don't ask me to find it now as it was an accident. Maybe there is a whole lot more hidden under those child like tabs that I have absolutely no interest in TRRRRRRYING to find them as it is just a maze of a mess compared to the workings of the old way which made popping in for a look see so pleasant and easy.

Bamboo I'm not understanding why you say the working are exactly as they were just a bit different.
You must have a more adjustable brain than me and I can tell you my brain has had a lot of changes to deal with. A number of injuries too and it still works better than most.

I just find it so irritating when I find a site that I like then set out to learn how it works bit by bit feeling please as I learn new things about it but knowing there are more things to learn. Then one day I long on only to find it's all changed. It really drives me crazy, now I have to start all over again, then when I have that figured out they change it again and again and again. I say enough already. I have so many things to tend to and just simply can't waste all my time trying to figure out changes on the sites I like. It should be about learning not driving us mad.

So I'm still sad because I won't be popping in as usual or exploring you're lovely blogs and I just love, I guess it's loved now, all your pics.

Angie its the people that make this site please don't write as lost we're still here and an english saying is " a change is as good as a rest", I think that it means it makes you really look at things properly and the sense of achievement when you mastered it ( which you will ) gives you that feel-good-factor :-)

Ah thanks gals for your support and encouragement to hang in here, but at the moment I don't have any interest to figure out how this site works, as I just don't find it at all appealing. Plus I have more important things to tend to at the moment. Like trying to put together some websites. I think my time is better spent on trying to find a home on the web for my art than trying to keep up with these social sited that keep change faster than I can keep up with them. I'll pop in once in a while maybe, or if I have a mail to respond to but other than that I find it all to changed for the worst. Not the people! Oh no, the people are lovely. I so enjoyed the English banter especially. Well..... one funny duddy came out of the grass with all the hullabaloo about the changes going on. Seems she though I was the only one not liking the changes. How wrong she is. Between Face book with it's changes all the time, not to mention all the other changes going on, I've just got fed up with it. I wouldn't mind if they were for the better, but heir not. It seems they only want to make room to shove adds in our faces.

So happy gardening or putting the garden to bed for the winter and maybe we'll chat again or I'll take a peek at your garden pics sometime when I've nothing better to do. Ha ha, if I can find them on here!

Yeah I've had to adjust my screen for brightness & font but then when I go back to my other sites I have to adjust it back. The nice greens is a huge improvement aren't they? Well, maybe improvement is not the right word to use but it sure is nice to see the old colour again far easier on the eyes. Now for the white to go bye bye! I might be able to check in more often & try to figure out the rest.

My eye's are uncomfortable from the glare of this white from looking at the new Blog I've done on my 'Front Garden Revamp, think I will have to wear some Sun Glasses in future Angieindgarden LOL
