Plan Bee
Help save the bees
Quote
Together we can help make 2010 the year that bees make their big comeback. Through Plan Bee we’re introducing lots of new ideas, activities and initiatives designed to give the bees a fighting chance.

I’ve spent an hour or more on the Co-Operative site reading about how to save the honey bee! I also signed an online petition for action on pesticides that harm bees. I like honey very much & have a couple of spoonfuls everyday with my breakfast!
Apart from having a sweet tooth, ;), I have been very concerned about the so called “colony collapse disorder” that made the news often last year & still is mentioned on occasions.
The Co-Operative Society is making a big effort to help the bee to recover. You can read more about what they are doing on the site I’ve linked to on here.
Plan Bee: what you need to know

Bees- they are essential for farming and for many crops that are grown, bought and sold throughout the world. Today though bee populations are suffering and it’s important to find out why. First though, just what is a bee? To find out I met up with Paul Peacock at the Manchester Bee Keepers Association. So Bees, Bumblebees, Wasps what’s the difference?

We noticed today that the little 'b's' have moved into our compost heap and have made it their home for this summer !! We are delighted but cannot compost anything now !!!!

What a Fantastic picture!

The credit for the photo doesn't lie with me as I found this picture looking on the internet for one of a bee as I couldn't copy one from the Co-Op site. I've only just realised that I'd forgotten to put in the credits! :-(
Hope people will sign the petition like I did as the bees need all the possible help we can give them - after we poisoned their environment with our insecticides.

Thanks for your concern, Jeansusan. I'm quite a bit better thank you & my cough has all but gone now! :-)
It will be interesting to see a photo of your honeybee windmill on your allotment.
I've recently become a member of a site dedicated to allotmenteers & have been posting there about our allotments.

It turns out that the owner lives in a village not very many miles from me!

There are many plants which attract bees, but I think I have found the best:I have never seen so many on one plant as those which are on the three big lavender bushes in my garden.
A neighbour of mine remarked that there was a bee on every one of the stems on the plants. Much as I liked seeing the bumblebees, there seemed to be very few of their little sister honey bees around. I wonder why?
I am glad that you raised this issue Balcony as we need to do all we can to maintain the colonies or our gardens will suffer: which is why I was very happy last week when a friend rang me to say that she had a swarm in her garden.
She was delighted to accept the services of a beekeeper and to learn a bit about the art of beekeeping.
