Irises From the Garden

The purple Irises glistened
in the morning stillness
with three tongues that lick
as if to catch a dew drop
upon each tip
Golden bearded and strong
these living gems
calling for those lucky enough
to scent and see them.
Rhizomes barely catch the earth,
with roots that serve as a place of rebirth
Dividing as they go
year after year, they double in show
Oh, this beauty with for my eyes to see
I cannot keep them for only me
with friends true I shall share.
and next year bring to them
this joy I find in
a purple world with hues of gold and fragile love.

What a delightful poem, Bg. I love the purple stripy Bearded. Maybe that's called Circus Circus? I can't wait for the Iris season to start and to see if any of my 2 year old crosses will flower for the first time.

Lovely poem Paul and you have a wonderful selection of Iris, great favourite of mine but will be a while before I see any here, I'll have to be satisfied with admiring yours from afar....

We used to call them flags Paul and we had the mauve ones in our garden in London when I was a child in the fifties. Lovely selection there, and they look so velvety. Lovely poem too.

Such exotic beauty is always over too soon:(

Thank You. Yes over way too soon. I don't recall seeing my blue 'Full Tide" iris this year. It must have taken a year off.

Perhaps we value them more because their beauty is so fleeting. Hope your Full Tide returns :)

I hope so. Thanks so much for stopping by. Hope things are well at your place. :)

I love iris, be they the reticulate type or the larger germanica. I have at least 2 I. unguicularis which flower Jan, the earliest ones in my garden.
they are just so beautiful.
