Royal Mail Rip Off

Took two small parcels of plants to the P.O today only to find that from April 1st the cost is no longer based on weight but size as well,so anything thicker than 8cm (3in) is deemed a medium size package this meant that had I posted it last week it would have cost £2.70 this week £5.65 if that is not inflation busting I don’t know what is .Had I sent them second class it was still £5.20.So from now on 2.1/2 maximum pots plus two thicknesses of cardboard.
Frankly I don’t know how they get away with it ,there is an outcry at a few pence on a letter but had heard nothing about 100% on parcels.there are exceptions you could send a painting 24 in x 18 in as long as it was thin enough !
Sorry GOYERs but plants are going to be smaller, bit like the half empty packets of crisps.

I read this Brian.Absolutley outrageous.I don't think it was that widely announced,so I think a few people are going to get a shock when they turn up at the P.O.

I found the same problem last week, Brian - the Post Office clerk actually had an empty cardboard box on her side of the counter to check if parcels would fit! Then she produced a piece of card with 3 openings, small, medium and large for flatter packages like Jiffy bags etc.! I am appalled at the steep price rise and shall be sending any plants in the future in as small a package as is humanly possible without damaging the contents.

Better keep my mosaics on the slim side too...no more marmite s by post!

I have started to use Myhermes they are a fraction of the cost of royal mail and you can either take your parcels to your local Londis shop or even have them collected from your doorstep and still be cheaper than RM and they are all tracked.Myhermes use the weight only and not the size of the parcel.

I thought myHermes wouldn't let us send any plants nor seeds etc.....(I apologise if I'm mistaken)

That's a disgrace! Probably cheaper to sell to amazon and get them to deliver free!

Myhermes will carry plants and seeds but they are goods that are excluded from compensation for damage.

I'm embarrassed to say I work for them!! Believe me the money certainly isn't going on a wage increase. We haven't had one for 2 years! It's a way of making us look profitable for privatisation.
If the government hadn't taken a break in paying into our pension scheme we wouldn't be in such a mess!!
It's all political and as usual the public suffer!

This is disgraceful , it use to be a pleasure to send seeds or a plant to a GOY friend but as things stand now it's cheaper for the person to buy the plant / seeds than it is for you to send them ,it's spoils things for everyone ...... I've never heard of Myhermes I shall be looking into that !

There is a Nice shop not too far away from us that takes in post for Myhermes. I can't see how this is supposed to benefit the PO unless someone is hoping to buy it cheaply.

This does a lot of damage to the big seedsmen's trade.
Will put them out of business.

Won't they just up their prices, too, Diane?

I am lucky, have T&M G.C. outlet about 5 miles away.
Get most seeds there, just send for odd packets letter post.
I was thinking it would make their catalogues redundant.

I,ve just been to look at the myhermes site and twice got a security warning about the site on my tablet pc. Anyone else have a problem, it looks good prices but the warning put me off...... being a non techie

That's shocking, but I'm so glad you told us Brian, as I'm about to send out some plants. They will have to be bare root now, not in little pots. never heard of my Hermes...perhaps we don't have them in Scotland yet.

Pam had a look at the site last night no problem.mentioned it to OH and she informs me that they are the company used my a lot mail order Catalog companies who supply cloths and household goods.

Thanks for that info,Bjs..RM have gone way over the top
with this..I didn't know about it either..I did know about the size and depth of envelopes, but not the parcels..talk about shooting themselves in the foot..less business for them again, not more, which is what they need..I don't see the logic at all ..cheaper to buy plug plants etc,at a GC ,or other suppliers..I shall be looking at Aldi,Lidl, Morrisons, and our local markets much more closely....

Karen there are two places in Dundee where you can hand in parcels or they will pick up from you.
It would be a shame if we can't send plants to each other because it would be impossible for local supermarkets, garden centres or nurseries to stock the wide range of plants grown by our members.
9 Apr, 2013
Hi agree totally, their prices are outrageous. I send all my parcel via Parcels To Go, they are a fraction of the price and are picked up at the door!
9 Apr, 2013
Thank Brian, I'll look at it on the desktop
9 Apr, 2013
Thanks Scotsgran, but I can't see myself driving to Dundee to post my plants. I shall only be sending out very small ones from now on.
9 Apr, 2013
Amazing increase in prices ... not good :o(
9 Apr, 2013
Oh wow that's a disgrace the price they charge, many thanks I got your parcel today safe and sound, I'll be sending yours on Monday morning.
10 Apr, 2013
Sad to shot themselves in the foot. And rotten to not pay into RM pensions. What a pity a pay rise for employees isn't included.
10 Apr, 2013
Myhermes pick up from you Karen for very little extra.

Oh Brian....what a disgrace. Especially when you have that lovely box pattern you use so often. We will just have to send more stamps!
