ARRIVAL OF THE QUEEN OF SWEDEN.

The Queen of Sweden arrived on Saturday 10th December and, although I welcomed her, I would have preferred her to come in the Spring
She was rather tired after her journey, and along with her twin, had a little sleep.
I eventually persuaded her outside with the promise of a hot tub (I lied about the heat)
Little do they know that, rather than the palace promised them, they will be residing in a hole in the ground. Oh dear, how are the mighty fallen:-(
As you can see, the soil is not too good and just underneath the topsoil where the lawn was, there was solid, compacted builder’s rubbish.
Here is some of the rubbish removed from the holes. My son-in-law kindly dug them out for me as I couldn’t penetrate it at all, even jumping on the spade didn’t budge it. The handle broke off the first of my spades Paul was using. Probably needed a pick axe, but I didn’t have one.
Here they are tucked up in bed, fortunately it has rained solidly since they were planted so I haven’t had to water them in. The accompanying booklet said to bury the stock 3 inches below soil level, seems an awful lot to me. Years ago, we had to keep the stock above soil level, I suppose the are not grafted now?
Doesn’t the soil look awful? I have filled in the holes using 3 large bags of compost and a banana skin in the bottom…!
Looking forward to seeing what she does next year…:-))

Great blog BA ~ you have such a clever way with words, made me smile.
I do hope the Queen enjoys her stay and looks wonderful.

Great blog BA, love your commentary on the settling in of Her Majesties. All that hard work in preparing their accommodation deserves some reward, hopefully in the form of lots of lovely flowers. Do keep us informed of their royal progess! LOL

Thanks Sandra, fingers crossed:-)

Sticki, when they arrived they looked so inconspicuous for the price. If only I could have got to DA's in the summer. My son-in-law has a car now and has offered to take me next year:-)

I will thanks Lily, I blame Karensusan, she sold me on the Queen of Sweden:-)

Ba ... as you lied to them about the hot tub you need to put some candles close by them ... tis the Queen of Swedens birthday on the 23rd! ... Are you hoping Santa brings you a new spade now ... the ground must have been so hard for your poor son-in-law to dig! ... Hope they grow well for you ... :o)

i will see you there in the summer then BA!!

Hope they flower well for you in summer, i have been ordering DA roses the last couple of weeks, four have arrived, just waiting for the last three. I know what you mean, I was always told, years ago, to keep the stock above ground level but now DA say 3 inches below and it does seem a lot doesnt it. I dont know why this is. They will send you a smashing catalogue for free you can request it on the website, shame I didnt see that before ordering....

The Queen of Sweden will arise magestically next spring to woo you with her beauty;0))

Ohh, I'm sure they'll be really lovely, what a treat to look forward to next year, it's always hard to imagine how a few twigs can produce something so beautiful!

Shirley, I'll try to remember...maybe Sticki will bake them one of her posh cakes? I did have another spade fortunately, but it's rather old and large:-)
21 Dec, 2011
Sticki, I will look forward to that:-) Now...about the Queen of Sweden's birthday cake....:-)

Cazcat, they sent me one of those catalogues after buying Mortimer Sackler in the spring. It was so lovely made me drool:-) I decided I must have the book, but as it was very dear I looked on Ebay. There was one which included a £25 gift voucher which I bid on and won. It cost £35 plus a fortune in postage. When it arrived it was beautiful, but no more use than the gorgeous catalogue! I think I got carried away lol. Maybe someone on here will know about the 3 inches, I'll put a question on:-)

Hi Pixi, love the hat:-))

Pansy, it's hard to believe it when you receive a few twigs isn't it lol. Hopefully I will be able to put some glorious pics on:-)

Libet it sure does. I almost copied your comment lol. I just hope they look good in the centre of the small bed as DA's always seem to recommend planting 3 together to make a good shape:-)

Looking forward to the pictures, Bornagain. She may have been expecting a palace, but your queen was very lucky to get such beautiful holes in the ground, and dug out at such cost, too!

Gattina, filling in the holes was hard enough, fortunately my son-in-law is made of sterner stuff:-)
22 Dec, 2011
Sticki, I'm sure I..erm..they will enjoy any of your cakes:-))

Hi Rose, I nearly went with your Bonica, but I do need some perfume. Maybe I could have her somewhere else as she is so lovely. I almost had Cadfael, but after hearing how large they can get decided on the Queen and yes, it's always good to have something to look forward to:-)
22 Dec, 2011
Bonica this year has flowered and flowered and if you have room in your garden, its worth having. The long flowering season makes up for the lack of perfume.
22 Dec, 2011
was that a freudian slip BA??
22 Dec, 2011
Sort of Sticki:-) I'll try and find space Rose:-)

I trust the Queen(s) will show her appreciation to her humble and most caring servant by wearing her jewels all summer long.
Been looking through the catalogue myself as I want a couple of climbers but there`s so many its hard to decide.
30 Dec, 2011
I copied you with Mortimer Sackler lol, very pretty. I'm definitely visiting DA this year :-)
30 Dec, 2011

how exciting BA, even though you would have prefered them in spring its better to plant this side of winter as the ground is warmer than after winter, sounds odd but true. so i think your roses will be perfect next year :o))
