JOLLY GOOD SHRUB PHOTINIA DAVIDIANA PALETTE

I bought this shrub many years ago and it grew quite large. Apparently it can reach ten feet. I started cutting it down to about eighteen inches a couple of years or so ago. I much prefer its gentle tones to Red Robin. When I bought it it was called Stransvaesia D. Palette. It likes full sun to light shade and is evergreen. In May (if you dont keep chopping it lol) there are lovely white flowers followed by pink berries. I’ve recently bought a P. Pink Marble, which is lovely, but I think I still prefer this:-)

I’ve tried to show you how it looks close up and its shape. I know I like to see how plants look in reality and what shape they make, hope you do too:-)

Excellent Ba - and I agree, I like mine better than P. Red Robin. It was here when we moved in, and I took a piece to Wisley once for ID and they couldn't help!! Useful to know about the name change too - thanks.

It seems to have fallen from favour doesn't it Sheila behind its brasher other family members. What do you do with yours? have you got a pic of it in flower or berry?:-)

ooo, I have not heard of this one before, it is beautiful, must look for one to add to my collection.

They used to be more common Michaella. I bet you could train it as a standard or something rather than just chopping it like I do. I once saw Red Robin as a standard in full flower...that looked good lol:-)

Wish I could oblige, Ba, but I've never taken its pic . . . didn't even know it had a flower (I'm blushing now). Maybe that's because it's in shade, and because I took years identifying it, have never realised that it would be happier with sunshine (more blushing!).

Mine's not in full sun Sheila, but it does get quite a bit. Is its colour as good in shade?:-)

Yes - seems to be. I'll see if I can get a pic tomoz, if it stops raining . . . but mine is pink, cream and green, just like yours.

I first learned of it when I was at. Brooksby College, we had to do plant ident and lost marks even for one letter wrong and I loved the way Stransvaesia davidiana pallette rolled off the pen, like Metasequoia glyptostroboides....my all time favorite.....
The plants are a delight too. :0)))

This is lovely.......but now you have me wondering....my neighbour has what I thought was Pink Marble. I successfully took cuttings from it last year. I even gave one to Scotsgran telling her it was Pink Marble. I'll need to go next door and have a better look!!
Would you mind if I posted some pics tomorrow and since you seem to know your plant so well, would you compare for me please BA ?

Well, my Buglossoides starts (and finishes!) a lovely deep blue-purple . . . exactly like Campanula globerata. It spreads, and is excellent in shade :)

I am a newby to this forum. I was led here bacause I was tracking down the stranvaesia davidiana palette shrub....having been asked by my tree butcher what it is! I love it and have ignored it for too long. Must give mine more attention and a bit more space to grow! This forum looks fun. Thanks to my lovely shrub!
