FREAKY WEATHER

Earlier today, the sky went ominously dark. Within a short time there were loud rumblings and flashes of lighning. Then large hailstones, some about three quarters of an inch (19mm) across came battering down. I thought they would break the windows the noise they made …so I went for my camera lol. Unfortunately, the pics aren’t very good:-)

We had it too herenin north Lincs Ba.....such torrential rain here not ice balls like you though, thank goodness. Hope your garden wasn't damaged.

here in shropshire it hailstoned thunder and lightening strong winds been trying to do some digging over the last few days had to stop as water was coming up to meet me and filling the trench ground is now full never seen it this way in 40 years

25 Jan, 2014

We had it around teatime yesterday,Ba..so thick,it looked like 2" of snow..Lots of accidents with skidding buses and cars, some overturned on the steep hills, and a friend was stuck in gridlocked traffic with her two young children for an hour and a half..on a journey that usually takes her 3 minutes from her Mum's house...it came and went in 15 minutes..!Just freaky,as you say,but the havoc it caused was unbelievable..I'm so glad we were safe at home...

25 Jan, 2014

Freaky indeed - we seem to be missing all the bad weather this winter! I'll have jinxed that now - just you wait and see.
Bet you were glad to be indoors BA.

25 Jan, 2014

I see lots of you are having freaky weather. Never seen hail with a thunder storm before, so odd isn't it ....wait 'til the fracking starts!!!:-( I haven't been out in the garden to see if anything's damaged, but it looks a mess out there anyway and I can't help thinking that winter is still waiting to pounce .... roll on spring. My hardy fuchsia Garden News has lots of new growth on, as do quite a few plants, I wonder if I should cut them down?:-)

25 Jan, 2014

had it at 2pm in east yorks too.

25 Jan, 2014

I would leave the old growth on,Ba..it will help to protect it,should we get wintery conditions..it should grow again from the bottom,in late spring..I have wrapped some fleece around the roots of a couple of mine, and weighted it down with a couple of stones....just in case.:o(

25 Jan, 2014

It was freaky wasn't it Ba?! We had it here just after 4pm, and I was glad I'd done the gardening earlier and was in the warm . . . all over in about 15 minutes.

25 Jan, 2014

Same here.... bird table went flying, thought the plastic grow house was going to go too, hastily put a couple of bricks inside before being pelted with hailstones, like everyone says, over in about 15 mins.Stupid weather!!

26 Jan, 2014

Those hailstones sound dangerous ! I hope you get a better day today.
It's pouring down here again this morning, but we had a mostly sunny day yesterday, in between a few blustery showers.

26 Jan, 2014

Hi all, I don't think the rain has stopped for at least 20 hours ....I wonder if this is the wettest January? I can hardly remember a day without rain. With that freaky storm, it's easy to see how our ancestors would think there was a very angry god demanding appeasement such as a sacrifice .... any offers? I must admit I felt a slight primitive fear myself.
Sandra, let's hope the rain doesn't drown 'em:-(

26 Jan, 2014

I spent the afternoon at the cinema with my grandchildren, went to see The Hobbit, had to wade through the water when we came out at 4.45pm, daughter said it had been thunder/lightning as well, luckily we arrived home between showers, got the candles ready as the power was playing up as well but relieved as it didn't go off completely.
I was going to do my birdwatch today but its pouring down again, windy and dark and not a bird to be seen as of yet....

26 Jan, 2014

It was about 3pm here on saturday .......so dark our outside lights came on....then flash and crash overhead, hail not quite as big as yours Ba (showoff :0)))

Today is just grey wet and windy so I made a cake!

26 Jan, 2014

I've had the odd blackbird and bluetit today, but that's it. Hope your power stays on:-)

26 Jan, 2014

I reckon nature is just about fed up with the way we're treating everything, cant imagine what it'll think to the fracking Ba, or what subsequent horrors will arise.

26 Jan, 2014

We had this here in N.E. Lincolnshire too, apart from the hailstones ! That was good photography BA !

26 Jan, 2014

Hi Janey, I think if there weren't massive financial interests involved our clever boffins could come up with safe and renewable ways to produce power. I can dream:-))

26 Jan, 2014

I think it was the hail stones that made it so weird Rose. The thunder was so loud and then the windows being battered ... quite scary lol. I have been known to enjoy the odd storm, but not this one:-)

26 Jan, 2014

Ours came so quickly and loudly BA, that our grandaughter who was here at the time (9 years old) shot under the table and wouldn't come out !

27 Jan, 2014

Weird weather indeed Ba ... our outside light by the back door was whipped off ... can you believe it was hanging down just by the wires thanks to the that 'mini-tornado' on Saturday! 'Sparks' coming to fix it later.

I have read a news report from Chobham in Surrey that a lady at her stables saw feral cats being lifted up and thrown around 'like carrier bags' in the wind! How awful!

Much calmer today ... possibly with a bit of sunshine later ... :o)

27 Jan, 2014

Yes, today's calmer weather is very welcome . . . glad we don't get that alarming combination of thunder, lightning and hail too often :)

Meant to say it was a good capture tho, Ba!

27 Jan, 2014

Oh dear Rose, I would have joined her lol ...and then those poor cats ....now Shirley, I need to know if they were alright. I was disappointed with the pics Sheila, but I wasn't going out to get better ones:-))

27 Jan, 2014

Ba ... here is the news from Saturday:

"Stable roofs were shaking and lifting and my granddaughter went to make a feed up for the pony and the shed she was in lifted.

She jumped out of it and it just shattered, it was thrown backwards and broke into four pieces.

"We've got four feral cats in the yard and they were being lifted off the ground - about 6ft off the ground - they just went round like a big paper bag."

She said the people and animals who were caught up in the storm were uninjured.

What a dreadful experience for that poor girl and the cats too ... :o(

27 Jan, 2014

So scary,
its not 8.00 yet, very grey and dark, and pouring heavy rain to add to the floods already over some of the lanes, makes the village here a bottleneck as the other villages try to get over the river bridge, the alternative is a long diversion

28 Jan, 2014

Thanks for that Shirley, I feel better now:-)

28 Jan, 2014

Very grey here too Pam, but as we're on a hill, no actual flooding in the vicinity of our house. Everywhere sodden though. Can you get to the shops etc? It must be awful for those in the Somerset Levels, I hope Barbara is ok:-(

28 Jan, 2014

I'm on a hill too and no problems for me except the village has the river bridge, the queues to which are very long in the rush hour.
I have other ways out from here but its a long way round....

I was watching them pump out the somerset levels on the tv last night, they seem to be pumping into the river........I may be wrong but I thought it was the flooded rivers that caused the problems in the first place......

28 Jan, 2014

That's the problem with pumping ....you have to have somewhere to empty it into!:-)

28 Jan, 2014

and there was me thinking the same!..It defies logic to my untrained mind..but if peoples homes can be eventually dried out....till next time ! it's just so very sad...

28 Jan, 2014

Its like digging another hole to put the soil frome the first hole in......

those poor villages, like ghost towns.......what will they come back to after all this time
And more to come it seems.....

29 Jan, 2014

Maybe making a few Lakes would help, and make somewhere for water to drain into? plus an added place for Wildlife, and for people to visit as a designated beauty spot..but then, would they be able to access them over waterlogged land..just a thought..back to the drawing board I think..someone somewhere needs to be thinking of something!

29 Jan, 2014

Here I am lol:-))
They could build mountains of silt and soil etc, grow some tenacious plants on them to stabilise. New reservoirs could be built in areas of clay extraction and as Sandra said, beautiful lakes like they have in France. Voila ...two birds with one stone, well three birds actually ...unemployed people could be given proper jobs ...four birds, the extracted clay to make bricks for new housing .... five birds ... work for builders.... whew!.... I need a lie down now:-)))

29 Jan, 2014

Well thought out Ba..apart from the NIMBY's who will protest ...and don't like many changes at all..but we could fight them on the beaches,in true British spirit..if it wasn't too far to walk from one ! :o)

29 Jan, 2014

You wouldn't have as far to walk as me ....you make a start Sandra, I'll join you when I can:-)))

29 Jan, 2014

I have no inclination to walk further than my nearest bus stop ,Ba..and then into town to let the train take the strain...pick you up en route? :o)x

29 Jan, 2014

To tell the truth Sandra, I think my fighting days are over, even on the beaches:-((((

30 Jan, 2014

Have you had this sleety rain :0 (
Dreich is a word that comes to mind!
and have you seen tomorrows forecast

30 Jan, 2014

Yes we have Pam , some snow too, but didn't stick. I think it said on the radio that it's the wettest January in the Midlands for 50 years. I may have that wrong of course lol. Have you seen that Barbara (Spritz) is not well? Let's hope for a revival when spring arrives:-)
