WINTERBOURNE BOTANIC GARDEN. EGBASTON, BIRMINGHAM.

Yesterday I went on a U3A coach trip with three friends to the above gardens. Winterbourne House and Gardens has been owned by the University of Birmingham since 1944 and is home to over 6,000 plant species, I lost count at 4,780 :-) The gardens are lovely and well tended. The weather dry and warm although rain was forecast and the tearooms and terrace charming as was the little shop. There were a few plants on sale and I bought a very pretty plum nemesia and soft pink diascia … oh and a lovely gardening apron and scented draw liners and the most deliciously scented soap:-)

Here is Gilbert Green House, this must be the favourite one as it’s the only one they named:-)

I couldn’t help thinking that this dovecote was very surprised to see me!

Love this cornus:-)

Fabulous bog gardens, my pics dont do justice.

Took this pic from handsome arched wooden bridge across the pool.

Here are my buys:-)

We didn’t get to see much of the Arts and Crafts House as the gardens were so lovely and the weather so nice. I would love to visit here again in the summer and have a good look round the house as well. It really is worth a visit if anyone is going to be in the Birmingham area. Here is their website if you’re interested:-)

A lovely place to visit B.A the house and gardens are stunning and the planting so soft and mellow. I think I like the Bog Gardens best so natural and tranqiul and I love your purcashes, you had quite a spending spree, BA if you do go again make sure you take your purse lol

What a lovely place to visit Ba.....see what you mean about the dovecote :0)

The plants look well tended, are they labelled too, it helps with 'plant name overload!'

I love the gardening apron, I could make one of those........

What a beautiful place - I can't believe you missed the remaining 1220, tsk tsk ;)
The bog gardens are wonderful and those trees lined up in front of the house, it amazes me how people have the foresight to see such marvels. Thanks for sharing your day trip with us.

Thanks Carole, it was lovely. It's strange how you miss what's almost on your doorstep isn't it. I think I'd better leave my purse at home next time though:-))

Hi Pam, I didn't notice the dovecotes expression until I down loaded the pics ... he looked horrified ... I did have on a rather garish top lol. Some of the plants were named, and, obviously those in the greenhouses were labelled, but many weren't. They had cat mint (nepeta) everywhere and it looked lovely especially in contrast with the acid yellow flowers of the euphorbia. My pics seem a bit dull to me, whereas there the colours zinged. B.A. Enterprises has the patent for that apron so you'd better not think of copying .......:-))))

Thanks Scottish, I'd never even heard of Winterbourne House etc until I booked the trip. We take our own lovely places for granted I think. Before visiting here we went to the Barber Institute, also owned by the Uni, it has a fine art collection, hadn't heard of that either:-))

Thanks Hywel, whenever I see Cacti now I think of you. As I was taking the pics I said to my friend, Hywel would like these ..... She had no idea who I was talking about:-))) I'm definitely going back to see the house properly too. I can even get there by bus:-)

Have you never been either Jane? I didn't know of its existence. We also visited the Barber Institute and while there heard singers rehearsing for The Marriage of Figaro and we booked tickets for the performance which is next week. I'm becoming right gadabout:-))
