Waxwings

It was tea time this morning when I looked out of the sitting room window to see – waxwings! We were visited by at least two dozen of them and there they were, right outside the window. We are fortunate enough to have seen waxwings before, but never in our own garden. There is a Cotoneaster horizontalis growing against the house wall surrounding the window and the red berries were the attraction of the birds.

The main body of waxwings sat in the birch at the end of the garden but then swooped down to land on the acer and mallus just outside the window before coming on to the cotoneaster.

I would have loved to get pictures of them on the cotoneaster itself but going outside just then would have frightened them away. I did get a few shots from inside the house though, looking out through the window. Even with all this activity the small birds still kept on feeding.

Oh, you are so lucky! I think these are absolutely beautiful birds. I've only managed to see them once, many years ago, but I live in hopes. Hope the folk law which says bad weather follows them isn't true!

It is always a treat to see these winter visitors. Unfortunately I didn't hear them, Stickie, for two reasons: a) the double glazing of the window and b) the voices are too high pitched for me to hear! I can hear most birds but not waxwings :-((( No, Scottish, no way am I going to sit out there!!! The birds are still around as we saw them in a neighbours garden when we went for a walk.

Oh what a wonderful sight. I sometimes get a smallish flock passing through from the neighbouring field and the hedgerows. lovely photos despite the windows.

You are so lucky! I have never seen any. (I did see flash of black and red as a bullfinch flew across the road yesterday though - first sighting for about 35 years!!) And what a beautiful view of those birches outside your window.

I`ve never seen them in my garden but last year they arrived at the trees that grow on the green over the road from our daughters house, the flock stayed around until they had completely stripped all the berries from the trees then moved on, they are smothered in berries again so she is hoping they make another appearance and is keeping a watchful eye out, lovely photo`s Mr B, thankyou for sharing.......
