My Heuchera Babies

Some of you may remember a few months ago I talked about the Heuchera seeds that I took from two of my Heuchera – Marmalade and Licorice. Well I thought you may be interested to see the variation in colours that I have from that sowing.. Some are like the parents, but some are coming through with different colours.

Well they are, but easy to manage really. I am always looking for a challenge when it comes to gardening and plants. So it was a bit of fun, but I ended up with such a lot and I can't bear to throw any away. I have been lucky though and sold a few at our local country market.

I haven't noticed that they self seed. I just took the seeds myself Ladybug. I just scattered it in a tray of multi-purpose. I had two plants side by side so they cross pollenated I presume

Pleased to hear that Bloomer.

Well done -- they're splendid. I can't get them to survive in my garden, alas, but my next door neighbour has a fine marmalade one in a pot. But, unlike you, she didn't raise hers from seed -- a fine achievement.

Thank you. Marmalade is a super one.

Can you tell me the process for growing these from seed? Can you get seed from GC? and would I be able to grow them indoors....no greenhouse!

You sure have a great variety there....how are they doing now? and when did you first plant the seeds, please?

24 Oct, 2010

Hi J, I'm not sure if you can get seed from GC., but I just took the seed from my own flowers as they died off. They don't all come true, but I started them about September last year. I would think you could do it indoors, I did mine in a cool greenhouse (no heating) and put them outside in the spring. They are now full size plants. I started some more off in Sept.this year, and they are now about half inch high. The seeds were from Georgia Peach, but already it looks like there are some different colours.
What I like about Heuchera is that they have colour all year round.
