Aphids - and getting rid...

We all have different ways of dealing with Aphids. During this long hot spell we have been inundated with the little blighters…the spiders and Lady birds can’t cope, so here is my treatment..
I crush maybe three cloves garlic into hot but not boiling water…steep overnight, strain, and then transfer into my sprayer..It works for me, the smell or even taste only seems to bother the aphids…and after two maybe three sprays, hey presto, they have departed…Hope this helps :o))

I'm pleased if it does help, I was amazed at just how many plants and shrubs had been attacked...I used to use soapy water, but I think the little blighters got used to it, while garlic is an aquired taste :o))

Crissue, Thanks for your comments on my blogs.
I'll certainly try your remedy as we have aphids on a climbing rose; no shortage of garlic in France....
BTW.... our cat came with us from the UK (10 years ago now) she's 13 and still as mad as a kitten. Within a few weeks of moving here she'd seen off several feral cats and cleared the house and outbuildings of mice and rats. Worth her weight in gold...

Have you tried spraying with the water from boiled rhubarb leaves.
An old chap who came to do some gas fitting for us turned out to be a keen gardener, he also suggested planting marigolds between the plants.
I have done this and up to press don't seem to have a problem with aphids.

sorry hit wrong one! crisssue when ive done the garlic spray can i put the bits of garlic round the base of plants or will it do any harm
11 Jun, 2011
Hi Ann...I can't see where it would do any harm, in fact I think, in view of the odd male cats that like to lift their tail near my roses, I might just do that too..certainly won't go to waste :o) good idea...

Cant get out to get any fresh garlic today but do you think i can used crushed garlic i have in my cupboard? silly question probably lol

Hi Smilerjane....Perhaps if you make a small amount...it may be ok...I have crushed garlic in the cupboard, it might disolve quickly for you so you can get on with your spraying...When I use fresh garlic, sometimes if I'm not waiting for it, I leave it to steep for a couple days even longer, its really potent....good luck...
