“Fifteen Men on the dead man’s chest.
Yo ho ho, an’ a bottle o’ rum!
Drink an’ the Devil ‘ad done for the rest.
Yo ho ho, an’ a bottle o’ rum!”

Ah well, it might be the night o’ Hallo’een, with many witches to be seen, and the clocks turning back, too, if only for an hour. Time waits for no-one, however, and there was “work” to be done! “Treasures” to be buried, and, also, dug up. The day was bright and sunny, but everything stayed permanently damp, and the compost we dug smelled as sweet as a freshly-dug grave.

It was with heavy heart that we tore out the Bidens “Pirates Treasure”, “Doubloon” marigolds, etc., from the treasure chest, as they were still providing some colour. I have, however, been collecting seed, and taking cuttings, from all.

This morning, Eilidh helped me plant up the chest with 35 daffodil bulbs, a mixture of two varieties; “Fortune” and “Golden Ducat”.

After “burying” those treasures, we added fresh compost and our very own brand of “mulch”.

We love the finshed "article! :-))

But now, it was time to move on to digging up some “treasures”.

Eilidh loved delving into the container where we had made our second sowing of “Kingston” carrots. We had chosen this variety for the link to Kingston, Jamaica, and its neighbouring city/port of Port Royal, an historical real-life, pirate haven, and setting for scenes in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies.

This second sowing, of course, produced mainly baby carrots, but there were a few good-sized ones, too.

Then, we dug up the last of our potatoes………

(I loves the gloves, lol!)

All in all, we were pleased with this little lot – should help keep me crew scurvy-free!!

Where was my son, James, whilst all this was going on? In his bedroom, applying his make-up, lol!!! (10-year-old-blokes are so self-conscious, these days, lol!)

“Herein lies a fortune, and golden ducats!

“Do you think that anyone would notice if I borrowed some costume jewellery?

And so, as darkness fell, earlier, across the land………

…and the good ship “Capt. Kiddin’” sets sail with a skeleton crew……………

…..’twas time to go out “guising”!!!!!!

MwhaHaHaHaHa!!!!

It was great to be able to tie in our garden theme with Halloween!!!

:-)))

Aha, that there be a fine blog, Cap'n. The gloves are very scary, as is the make-up, a fine job he did make of it though ! Love the facial hair ... lol ! Those carrots will be lovely if you steam them ... I may have said before that I always steam vegetables now ... flavour stays locked in. The treasure chest is looking brilliant ... the cleaver in the skull is quite scary though ! Hope you had a lovely Halloween night. : o )))

Thank ye Kindly, All
It was a great finale to the end of our two week-long school holiday, Bb! - back to school in the morning, but this was also a great rehearsal for the school Halloween party on Wednesday. I think that James did not do too badly, with his makeup (hard to turn a blond, blue-eyed into Captain Jack Sparrow, lol!).

When they came back with their "loot", was reminded of Christopher Lee as Willy Wonka's dentist father in the most recent movie version of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", which starred Johnny Depp. Strange how one theme seems to blend with another????? :-))))

I really think that you could do better, elsewhere, Joan!!!

:-)))

After today, Bo'sun, the skeleton might well be me!!! LOL!!
The guising did go well, though, which might just save me from the gibbet!!!

No wonder you smile, Joan - LOL!!! :-)))

Thats a very good crew you have there David, very handsome Captain Jack, typical though, leaves the dirty work to his shipmate who I might add has done a fine job burying the lastest treasure trove.
Happy Halloween.......

You know, David, I love the way you all join in the fun and you encourage such creativity with your children. I'm sure they'll have enjoyed and will remember Hallowe'en 2010 with great memories of pirates, treasure, fresh home-grown veggies, jewels and bulb planting.

A great blog....thanks! :)

Many Thanks, everyone, for all the kind comments!! Halloween is always "mad" here, and the garden, with its theme, was very appropriate this year. :-))

i really enjoyed that, David. I'm not a fan of Hallowe'en, but I'm pleased that you three had such fun. Lovely blog - thanks. :-0)

4 Nov, 2010

Brilliant blog David, those vegs look very tasty. Like your little pirate too some hard work gone into that look. I'm like Barbara, not a fan of Hallowe'en but I don't mind the little darlings knocking my door if they have made an effort like that.

4 Nov, 2010

Many Thanks. all!! :-))

I really enjoyed being able to include our jobs in the garden that day in the blog. :-))

Have just made a "cauldron" of carrot and parsnip soup with the proceeds! :-))

Not a real fan of Halloween, myself, nowadays, I must admit. When I was their age, 40 years ago, it was different. We went "guising" in order to get finance/donations for our street Guy Fawkes bonfire and firwework display. We always got on well, and not a sweet in sight!!! We had to "perform", in return for waste wood, fireworks, baked potatoes, etc., for what was a marvellous community party a week later! - Wonderful memories!!!

Having to "educate" my 2, now, as to the difference between "guising" and "Trick or Treat", and the difference between Pumpkin and Swede/Turnip Lanterns, lol!!!

:-))))

cool

Love it! The pirates looked great! And so did the veggies...made me want to try and grow vegetables at some point...I notice you grow them in containers...do you find it easier or is it that you don't have space in the garden?

5 Nov, 2010

Brilliant blog! Agree with W/lass, what great memories your kids will have.

5 Nov, 2010

Thought that you might like the skulls, Np! :-))

Hi Raquel! Have grown veggies for quite a few years now, and used to have a real vegetable garden. My current garden, however, has no soil/borders, whatsoever, so growing in containers is the only way. I am amazed by just how much can be achieved in containers/small spaces, however. I really do hope that you will try growing something next year on your balcony. :-))

Many Thanks, Tetrarch. These events always bring to my mind many of my own. :-))

5 Nov, 2010

Well guess you secured the fun for your grandchildren too!

5 Nov, 2010

Grandchildren, Tetrarch??? I'm the oldest Dad in the local school, lol!!! (but only in years, not mental age). Even if i never know them, it would be fun, though, to able to pass on something, eh? :-))

5 Nov, 2010

There is something treasureish (is there such a word?) about veggies grown under your own care. Those little carrots looked delish ..and they reminded me of the special carrot bed that I made many years ago to grow carrots in the north... It was milled sphagnum, sand, rich clayey topsoil and rich compost with some perlite and vermiculite that was combined to a state of perfect amalgamation! LOL. It was only 24 inches square but it was also 18 inches deep. The carrots would have grown nice and long...had they had the chance! (Baby carrots topped with butter, sealed in foil, and placed on the barbeque!...droool!)
Looking at all the lovely comments and compliments I'm hard pressed to avoid redundance, would like to say "Bravo!" to your two "guisers" (geysers! ..LOL!)
(and good luck with the test, you will ace it, I'm sure.)

5 Nov, 2010

Love it ! :D

12 Nov, 2010

I might David, the idea if digging up such cute - and I'm sure deliscious! - potatoes and carrots is very tempting!!

19 Nov, 2010

What a fantastic pirate outfit, and a good looking son you have. Prehape thats where I'm going wrong, my kids would only be interested if I agreed to grow their dreaded 'weed'............

27 Nov, 2010

Lori, I've decided that "treasureish" is going into our dictionary of pirate-speak, lol!! Those carrots on the BBQ sound wonderful - must try this next year. :-))

Good Luck, Raquel! :-))

Thank Ye Kindly, Sandy. Well, you could always start there, and see where things go, lol. :-))
