Cornus Venus

I’m quite excited as yesterday I collected my Cornus Venus, which is supposed to be the mother of all Cornus trees. The white bracts can reach 15cm dia.
It’s been on order a few months from Bluebell Arboretum/Nursery, shipped in from Germany, so posh haha it has its own number. Already has buds so fingers crossed for Spring. :-)

I love the sound of this beautiful tree, will keep an eye open for your photos Dawn.......we bought the Betula Joes being delivered on Wednesday, exciting isn't it buying new trees!

How lovely Dawn. I do adore those white bracts, which on my Cornus Eddie’s “White wonder” took years to appear, and I’m always thrilled if I get more than 10! Hopefully yours will flower a lot sooner as it has a pedigree - fingers crossed for you :)

Very exciting. Robert at Bluebell said to get the most bracts it needs full sun so I've got to do some clearing, it's going on the new garden where most of my ornamentals are, straight in front of you as you walk in, looks like a couple of dark leaved sambucus have got to go.
Siris, the garden I call the new garden was always intended to be a mini arboretum but with tiny trees dotted around it looked so bare at the start so I've filled with perennials to fill the gaps which in time will go.
Dotty, how exciting, it's going to be a beautiful betula.
Sheila, Eddie sounds lovely too. This is a hybrid between Cornus kousa and Cornus nuttallii, Robert says they're quite fast growing for a cornus and this young one should have plenty of bracts next year.

Thanks Hywel, it should be tough but we get dreadful frosts, it should be a nice one so I need to give it room to do well and for it to look it's best.

Ooooh...how beautiful! As you know, I really love the Flowering Dogwoods, but its too windy here for most of them. I have one C. Florida which is supposed to be the toughest in windy sites. It hasn’t flowered yet, but it is very young and its growing well. They have such beautiful autumn colour too. Can’t wait to see it next June Dawn!

Oh dear now we all have to wait patiently, I swear I can feel your excitement Dawn.
Amy I'm envious as well, I love Dawns garden, (estate), going to find it one day just to go for a meander...Shh, don't tell her....

Thanks Karen, let's see how this card in the wind, Robert said the only thing to avoid was flooding, well we are prone to that but not where this is going, he never mentioned wind just full sun, I can ask him for you if you like, any ones that will take the wind.
Amy. I thought you might be interested in this one as your on the tree hunt.
Eirlys, I hope so :-)
Sue, you'd be welcome any time :)

Just wondering, Dawn, how you got your tree home? They are tricky things to buy . . . if we use mail order, we might get a poor specimen, but if we go to a nursery to choose in person, it won’t fit in the car!
I’m sure you’re going to adore your gorgeous new tree, and we will all be agog to see it in bloom next Spring :)

Hello Sheila
It's only small, about 3 feet tall, we stood it in the foot well in the back of the car. Bluebell Nursery are RHS accredited, they have coach trips of Rhs members taking a tour around the arboretum, I've known them many years and only a couple of miles away so I just trusted them really.
13 Nov, 2018
Thanks Dawn - yes, I’ve heard Bluebell are good. Glad you were able to get it home yourselves . . . I guess the answer is to choose a manageable size!
13 Nov, 2018
Yes Sheila but when I've had trees delivered they come so well packaged, Mail Order Trees especially good, I wonder if they're better straight from a tree nursery rather than a GC where they may have them knocking around for a long time.
13 Nov, 2018
I think you’re right Dawn, but these places can vary. I’m lucky enough to have a quality GC not far away who deliver twice a week. Last year I bought a Prunus ‘autumnalis’ from them - always wanted one - so I’m looking forward to seeing its blossom :)

Now that is handy Sheila, I have the Autumn Prunus too, I must check mine for buds.
