Roses Purchase

Last year I purchased a few David Austin roses and this year I wanted to add a few more but not necessarily DA ones but ones with a strong fragrance.

I came across a Super Scented Rose Collection of 6 bare root at J Parkers half price at £17.97 then I found a 10% discount code which equates to them being £2.70 each. Two of the roses in the collection are on the DA site at £17.50 each, one being Fragrant Delight which was on my wish list.

They arrived yesterday, I wasn’t sure what to expect but they looked OK with good roots.

The Collection was:
Blue Moon
Arthur Bell
Fragrant Cloud
Margaret Merrill
Prima Donna
Fragrant Delight

To my disappointment one had a lot of die back and to make it worse it was Fragrant Delight :-(

So I gave it a hard prune down to good growth and complained to Parkers. I’m sure it will be fine, do they say the harder the prune the better the flowers?

After soaking I planted them as per DA guide to give them a good start so we will see. I will feed and care for them and see how they go.

Parkers replied to say Fragrant Delight will be replaced :-) so I may end up with two.

What are your thoughts on rose purchases?

I will do a blog on progress later in the year.

Absolutel bargain Dawn. Time will tell, but they look terrific. Just as good as if bought from DA. And I think FD will be fine, but now you'll have two, so even better! I have added three new standards this winter, so I am very excited too!

they look just as good as the ones I bought from Beales roses. I do find parkers to be good when you have problems. I had some very poor cyclamen coum corms a few years ago and when I sent them pictures etc the person I corresponded with was horrified and replaced them free of charge. I was told to bin/keep the duff ones. 3 of the better ones have grown foliage but as yet no flowers.
I think if you tell them there are problems rather than just 'slag them off' they respond positively.

The roses you have selected will be beautiful.

Karen, Meadow, Seaburn I feel assured the roses will be OK now after your comments, I hoped they looked OK. The DA ones are expensive but I do have Jude The Obscure on my list.
Meadow, why ever they packed the dodgy one, I've no idea.
Karen, look fwd to seeing your standards.
I know Parkers are cheap and cheerful but over the years I've had some great plants, along with some duff ones. I once complained about the state of a Hydrangea Annabelle and was sent another, then both grew, whoops.

No I haven't Meadow. I've had bulbs, perennials and shrubs but never dahlia tubers.

They are generally very good for bulbs and Tubers I find Julia. Perennials, not so much.

I agree. I buy bulbs from Parkers but nothing else. I had a couple of bad experiences with perennials from them

Good luck with your roses. I'm not even sure I know what a David Austin Rose is - so I'm looking forward to seeing lots of pictures from you. :).

Thanks Bathgate
David Austin was (he died around 2018) a renowned rose breeder and patented 'The English Rose', they're online and their website has lots of info. People in the US have them, I think they get from Garden Centres as opposed to online.

I have had lots of wonderful dahlia tubers from Parkers. Their bulbs are usually very good.
Perennials can be mixed from them, sometimes misnamed but you don't know until they flower. But again they have usually supplied replacements. I also find if you buy small plugs to grow on they often have 3 small plants per plug and you can split them and grow them on. I find them better than T&M.

I do love David Austin Roses. I simply have no more room for more plants unless I dig up my Cotoneaster and put a nice one there. Now that is an idea.

Even if you lost a couple Dawn, it won’t break the bank at that price, absolute bargains! a good rounded selection...

We have bought three roses 2 new varieties and one old one to replace a failing but much loved variety, the ones we moved ( new last year) all DA are growing away nicely....
Will look forward to seeing how you’re new roses do this Summer....

They were a bargain Dotty, the replacement Fragrant Cloud arrived yesterday so that's planted too.
I look forward to seeing yours too. I might get a couple of DA ones when the discount code comes out late spring. Lady Emma Hamilton and Jude the obscure.

I had Fragrant Delight and the perfume was beautiful. You could smell it before you got near it. One of my favourites for perfume is Gertrude Jekyll which I brought with me when we moved last year. I am sure your roses will do well! I always plant anything new with Empathy Rootgrow. It gets the plant off to a good start.

So Fragrant Delight is a nice one Rose, exciting :)
I used Empathy on the bare root roses when I planted them :)
