The world’s first black petunia flowers named Black Velvet, were developed using natural breeding techniques to turn them a dark black and will be on sale at a premium price of £2-£3 per plant in the UK next year
The plants, which have taken four years to perfect, are due to blossom in British gardens for the first time next spring.
Petunias are extremely common and popular bedding plants grown in borders, containers and hanging baskets during the spring and summer months.
Experts believe the new variety will be highly sought-after among gardeners as they will provide a wonderful contrast to coloured flowers.
I am a great Petunia fan and judging by the pics in today’s newspapers I will be ordering mine, in plenty of time.

Please would you tell me who's going to stock them, Denise? (PM.........sshhhh...it's a secret! LOL)

I saw them too (in daily mail!) not sure if I like them, I think I would like to see them actually in flower, I agree Pam they would look stunning with all the bright colours, I am imagining them with nasturtiums, those vibrant oranges etc. :~))

I found some info. on the internet ...

Petunia Black Velvet is the truest black petunia, with a velvety sheen.

Also introduced .... Black Pinstripe and Black Phantom...

Black Phantom is a near-black flower, with a chartreuse-yellow star.

Black Pinstripe is similar to Phantom, except the star pattern consists of quite narrow white bands.

Sounds interesting. Trouble is, I don't really like ordinary petunias much, they always get leggy and sticky by mid summer. Now a black surfinia, that I'd have to have...

They sound interesting :o)

i like the sound of those ~ as you say they will be fabulous for contrasting with other colours, i was imagining pale pink and bright green looking very good with them.

Don't feel left out SBG....I don't like petunias either. Never have and probably never will...just like you.
Black flowers are very intriguing though. I'd be interested to see how well they do.

You're not alone you two who don't like petunias much - I rate surfinias very highly, but the rest, well they have major drawbacks.

Just a warning, and to possibly put a dampner on things!! At the nursery where i work, we tend to get in 1 or 2 new strains of something every year. However, new introductions tend not do do as well as they should do. It takes a few more years after the 'discovery' until they perform at their best. Once it was the butter yellow geranium, 2 years running it was a bad pwerformer (from a nursery point of view) and this year, not of our plug suppliers have it any more. I maybe wrong with this one, but thats how it can sometimes be..!

Oh dear. We'll just have to wait and see, won't we!

26 Nov, 2010

We will Spritz.

That's true Nicky. I think they are in too much of a hurry to get them on the market and don't test them well enough.

27 Nov, 2010

Hmm, not unlike new technology then - there's always loads of glitches in any new software produced cos they're in such a hurry

We had a new petunia in last summer. It was pink with a dark throat and lime green picotee edges...called Pretty Much Picasso! It wasn't to my tastes but it sure sold well. Everyone wanted it.
