Makeover Recycled Madness..(Or What You Can Do With Some Spare Paint!)

Nowadays, despite recycling awareness, we still tend to live in a ‘throwaway’ society..though I think most us of Gardeners tend to think outside the box at times.
Recycling to a certain extent has always made the most sense to any of us who get pleasure from our hands in the soil, a full compost bin and a well displayed garden.

Therefore I was quite surprised the other day to find myself about to cast a very old, paint-flaking, tatty ornate wall basket bracket into the recycling bin, stating that it had seen its best and I would just replace it..that was till I saw the price of a replacement! How Much? Yikes!
Now I’m not tight, skint yes, but not tight, but pulling that dilapidated old basket bracket back out of the bin, I cast my eyes into the gloomy depth of the garden shed to see what paint may still be lurking in rusting tins.
The bracket had once been coated black, but being aluminium, what little paint still existed was flaking off at an alarming rate!
A wire brush, and a specialist primer based paint that must have been donkey’s years old, helped stabilise the bracket surface, and I was ready to feel an artistic urge to create something special.

Now I have spent so many months if not years, painting, having gained the slightly worrying reputation that if anything stood still long enough, it was game to be coated in whatever paint I had to hand! Poor Raff the mutt, didn’t dare linger too near when I had a paintbrush in hand and a mad glint in my eye..and the OH would just sigh and shake his head as he passed by..quickly.

Having recently renovated the porch at the front of the house, I decided in my wisdom to try and tie in the bracket with the colour of the porch door..Thankfully, this was a dark burgundy, so would be suitable for the floral design of the bracket, plus I painted the outer edge a black exterior gloss, and used a light green Hammerite paint to pick out the foliage detail.
Fiddly, yes! Messy, very! Chuffed at the end result?
Well what do you think?

White Specialist Primer applied, and it was water-based so even better!

Black exterior gloss and Burgundy wood/metal exterior gloss..The transformation begins!

Finished result..A much improved bracket that didn’t cost me a penny to do..

Detail of floral design..That was really fiddly!

Fitted outside porch and looking pretty good..

Basket added..completing the project..

Renovated porch and terraced front garden..Raff can breathe easier now, the paints have been put away..Hope my recycled makeover madness inspires you too…Thanks for looking in on me folks!\0/x

Thank you Sticki! It certainly brightens up the old bracket, and I didn't have to spend money doing it up as had everything here already. It is amazing what can be achieved with a bit of time and effort..I am all for recycled makeovers..

Well done my friend ..it looks wonderful..how lucky you had the right colours of paint left over...that could be worth a bob or two now..not that you would ever sell it,of course :o)

It is totally unique now..only one like it..lol. To get anything similar was over £10, Bloomer. I saved money by doing this, plus given it a new lease of life too, whilst using up old paint. There is a certain sense of satisfaction in doing it yourself isn't there..? Great to see you again my friend..Are you following the ditties on my Slug blog? lol..\0/x

I'm so glad you did that Bev. That is just amazing and such an inspiration to me as I am far to ready to place stuff in the bin in a lazy, thoughtless sort of way. You couldn't have made a better job, it's beautiful!

Great idea you should send the photo to the manufacturer I think it could prove popular. I have loads of tins of paint in the garage but my brackets are just plain - oh well!

Great idea - what a difference you have made and it's much more personal now.
Was thinking the same as Drc - but still a new coat of paint when needed will save me buying new ones when needed.
Thanks for this!

Wow! What a great response this has generated so far..Thank you all for looking in and posting comments. Karen, I must admit that I have been just as guilty in the past of doing that, but this has taught me to hesitate a little and put my thinking cap on first.. Andrea, I have an old bench too that needs freshening up so that is something I will be doing later.
Sometimes I think we can do a better job than the manufacturers, and it certainly does add a personal stamp to it too. Hammerite paint is really good on metal, even when it is rusty..Hope I've inspired a few ideas with this blog folks..Thank you for such a positive response\0/x

Love it, and so original. Most brackets I have ever seen are just plain black or green. And it's painted so well.
Good job done.:)))

Thank you Jane..Must admit, I did use art brushes for the more fiddly bits, but it made an enjoyable challenge, and am pleased with the result..Thanks so much for posting a comment.\0/
