Astronomy 2013

About this time of year, I start making my calendar for next year – I have to make my own, standard ones aren’t in big enough print, or don’t give enough room to write more than a very small word in large print.

I usually go through the astronomy sites and add eclipses and meteor showers etc on the very small chance that I’ll be able to see them.

Thought I’d pass on a link to a very useful site I just found – some of the moon pics posted onGoY are brilliant: with advance warning more people might be able to get more excellent pics (there’s one instance of a full moon when the moon is closest to earth, which should give a brilliant photo-op, given the right weather at the time!).

there’s plenty of other sites, but this one gives pretty good dates and explanations.

Great idea adding meteor showers etc.
I have a diary and always forget to look at it...so everything goes on my phone!

I started off marking new moons, as this time of the month is important to me, then started adding bits, and more bits and ... I need a bigger calendar, must get an A3 printer!

Thankyou Fran for the info, I hope you get your new calendar finished in time, it sounds as though you put a lot of detail on it.......

Just a little 'foreign knowledge' here ... In Spain meteor showers are known as 'San Lorenzo's tears.' No doubt there's a legend or fable to explain why he was crying, but I've yet to learn it!

We actually had a splendid view of the meteor showers on San Lorenzo's evening (well, actually it was 4 in the morning) this year. Here they are known as the "burning" tears of Saint Lawrence, and he was probably doing more than just crying as he was grilled to death, making him the patron saint of cooks! I've just had a look at your site, Fran, and it's lovely - worth a proper browse.

sounds a great display, Gattina - not seen a meteor shower since - well, forever, i think. remember one year we were at camp and sat up to 3 am for the Leonids - dark night in a forest in the country, best chance ever! but must have been looking in the wrong direction, or it was hidden behind the all-round trees.

St Lawrence - San Lorenzo - same name in different accents? Suppose France has similar, that'd bridge Spaon and Italy!

that's a site I've marked for future ref, Gattina - I've found lots before that gave sparse details, and I had to go to two or three to fill out all the details. But this one has all the data, and has links to more info, rather than just a bland list.

Oooh! What a nasty way to go! No wonder San Lorenzo's 'tears' are still seen! Whatever did he do to meet such a horrid death?

When given nine days' notice, he spirited all the treasures and relics and gave away all the Christian Church's money when the Roman emperor Valerian demanded he render its treasures, and brought him a bunch of beggars instead, saying that "These were the treasures of Christianity" So they cooked him. His symbol is a gridiron.

On my site, (you can find it in my profile), there are links to calenders for these sort of things, under astronomy,I think. I will be shortly updating it with next year's calendar.

Well! Poor old San Lorenzo for doing a good deed and putting money where it was needed instead of into the already bulging coffers of the Roman fat cats! He's my hero now!
