Rosmarinus officinalis ... BLUE LAGOON

Rosmarinus officinalis ... BLUE LAGOON

Some weeks ago I bought baby plants of different types of Rosemary. They are growing outdoors.

I was surprised to find this one in full flower at this time of year .. very pretty and lovely scented leaves too ! :o)))

It enjoys being in this pot with decorative pebbles.

It's a lovely colour. Can you use it in cooking, or is it just an ornamental one ?

4 Nov, 2012

Very nice TT. I am using Rosemary today with my lamb.

Thanks Sheila, Hywel and Cinders ...
Blue Lagoon rosemary can be chopped finely for use in stuffings ... and for cooking with meats ..

... but I'm vegetarian, so it will be ornamental for me :o)

I don't eat red meat myself, (I just wondered about the cooking) so I use my Rosemany to enjoy the aroma :o)
I hope it grows into a nice bush for you TT :o)

Thanks, Hywel.
I bought several varieties. The others aren't flowering at the moment ! :o)

4 Nov, 2012

Well I don't suppose it's really their main flowering time now. Hopefully you'll have nice flowers on them next year :o)

This Rosmarinus .. Blue Lagoon .. is supposed to flower May/June, so I wonder if it will flower again next springtime !

4 Nov, 2012

I think it might, if that's it's normal time. Sometimes you find things flowering out of season, aswell as when they're 'supposed' to do it.

This is a pretty one TT , I love Rosemary and often pick a bunch to put in the kitchen for the scent .. I have made a tea from the leaves when I've had cramp it's good for the circulation :o)

Hello Homebird .. Thanks.
The petals are blue with a hint of purple.
I'm very pleased with it. Bought it as a tiny plant some week ago !

A surprise to have flowers on it now! I like roasted veggies cooked with rosemary :o) Does Blue Lagoon have a particularly different taste to other types?

4 Nov, 2012

Hi Gem.
I was surprised and delighted to see the flowers !

I found this information about Blue Lagoon ...

Culinary Notes:
Use fresh or dried in stuffings. Use to flavour meat, very tasty on roasted vegetables. Steep sprigs in oil or vinegar. Flowers can be used in salads.

.. and a bit more ..

Cooking uses :
A classic herb ... a great taste to blend with garlic.
It is also good for flavouring oils.

The meat options are a bit lost on me too Terra, but the flavouring oils idea sounds good :)

I hope my little rosemary plants survive over the winter. They are outdoors, but in a sunny, protected part of my garden.

4 Nov, 2012

Very pretty one TT, they should be fine outside they are quite hardy, mine have blue flowers too (not flowering now!) and have survived several bad winters :o)

4 Nov, 2012

That is a pretty variety, we grow several different ones, they all thrive down south....

4 Nov, 2012

Thanks Neena and Dotty ...
It's good to know that my young rosemary plants should be okay over winter.
I have some large rosemary bushes of another variety which survive the cold weather.

lovely little flowers Terra, love the scent of rosemary :o))

Hi Sandra .. Thanks.
I looked at the Blue Lagoon plant again this afternoon. It is very happy, flowering away ... and yes ... the leaves have a wonderful scent :o)

5 Nov, 2012

I love rosemary with lamb, and love to touch the plants and get the aroma when out in the garden. I keep ours in a pot and its been out there in the coldest of weathers and has survived.

7 Nov, 2012

I do like rosemary, this one is such a pretty colour

Thanks, Linda for that reassurance about the winter.
Good to know that your rosemary survives in the pot in the chilly weather of Derbyshire !

Hi Pam. Thank you.
I looked at the Blue Lagoon today ... lots more new flower buds ! :o)

Yes, it is interesting that this Blue Lagoon is flowering so well ... and yet other young rosemary varieties in pots nearby seem to be waiting until next May/June to flower !
