Very old photo of Botanist, JOHN DAVIDSON ........... with wellies ! ........... at Vancouver Natural History Society’s Camp, in Canada.

John Davidson worked at the University of Aberdeen before being appointed the first Provincial Botanist of British Columbia.

Photo from my blog of 10th January 2009...
The UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA BOTANICAL GARDEN..

Requested by GoY member David for his GoYpedia Botanical Garden and GoYpedia Botany,.

Davidson established a herbarium in Vancouver and a botanical garden near New Westminster. This was moved to the University of British Columbia in 1916, where it became the UBC Botanical Garden.
It is the oldest botanical garden at a university in Canada.

Thanks, Aleyna and Jacque.

Hello Lily ~
On my UBC blog, Doctor Bob explains that the cloths wound around each of John Davidson's legs are correctly called puttees...
..that's not a word I had seen or heard before ! :o)

12 Dec, 2009

They were like bandages, worn in colder climate, hard to put on too, some were made of wool its a Hindi word. nice picture again interesting. Reminds me of years ago when the men went down the pits, in Wales always wore wool socks because of the water. Wool also absorbs oil very well, shame they did nt use this with oil spillages in the sea.

Perhaps the name for little knitted-woollen socks for babies - "bootees" - is a variation on "puttees" ? (Just wondering). :-)

David... your age is in question on my latest blog...

he he he

That's the result of writing too many Vedward diaries..

... were your baby bootees called puttees ??? .Lol. x

As requested TT:-
Great blog TT. I had not heard of John Davidson so you have aroused my curiosity and I Googled him to learn more. I found another picture of him raking in his (?) garden. They explain that the image is a hand-painted lantern slide, so one might assume that this might be the way the other pictures were coloured. See:- http://www.ubcbotanicalgarden.org/potd/2005/04/john_davidson.php
