Cryptomeria japonica elegans - for Simbad

Janey thats one of my fav trees....saw one this summer over 100 years old..it was HUGE!!!!! just love their foliage..:-)

It really is a very beautiful tree Janey, and displayed perfectly against the soft stone wall. Hope the Hakonechloea will be ok. Mine are in the ground, but they look much better in pots I think. Do you get a lot of seedlings from that Stipa? I 'think' it's the one I inherited here. I split it and replanted, but this summer tiny babies started popping up all over the garden. I am managing to keep on top of them....just!

They really are spectacular aren't they Sandra.....100years old, wow! Yes the foliage is very soft and rubbery isn't it? It's really coming into it's own, usually quietly in the background, but looking majestic now, I love it!

Yes, lots of seedlings Karen, well small plants now, they grow all over, like little gems! I've lots of seedlings from the Linseed grass which is a fabulous electric green in spring, the leaves grow like ribbons. Let me know if you'd like one.

I use the foliage in my Christmas wreaths..its so nice to work with.

Janey, your Hakonechloa will be just fine. My three are also bronze now, and their green shoots will appear around next March as usual. They are in pots and perfectly hardy.
I have bought a gardening magazine here in NZ, (there's a surprise!) And someone wrote in asking about Stipa tenuissima . . . they were advised against growing it as it's "so invasive" here! I like the fact that it seeds itself around at home, but not excessively.

BTW, love the look of Linseed grass, so I'm in the market for seedlings if you have enough Janey?

Thanks for that Sheila, think I may split it in the spring too. Ha ha are you looking at GoY whilst on your Hols in NZ, awwww, you were missing us....:)). I love Stipa, and it is so generous! I had to trim this ones pony tail as it was so long on the floor. Yes, baby Linseed for you too, looks lovely in a shady corner.

I didn't take my iPad to Sydney Sheila, and I did miss it! I didn't want to lose it but I did feel as far away as possible from home! Baby linseeds are looking well....:))

It has put such a spurt of growth on this year Amy, always in the shade and background, but now is coming it's own! It could do to go into the garden, but I'm not sure I can manage it now, I should have to chop the barrel up to get it out! Aw, thanks, there does seem to be little bits of all sorts, nothing very large, as I like splitting everything....:))

I can certainly understand that Janey. I almost didn't take my tablet, but I won't make that mistake again!

No Sheila, I did feel cut off from things, and of course the younger ones are on them all the time!

Hi Janey, I have Cryptomeria in the garden, too, but mine is green all the year. Is this some sort of C. elegans?

Katariana is hAve several cryptomeria japonica elegans growing in my garden. The ones in protected sites stay greener the reddest one is in a windy place with poor dry soil.

This one is continually in the shade Katarina and Sandra, and is always damp, I love the fact that it changes colour for the winter...:))

Thank you Carole, it has grown into a lovely shape this year, I'm not sure how long I'll be able to keep it in the barrel though!
