My Ice Cream bananas are developing very nicely. They won't ripen until the beginning of Sept. Photo taken July 18, 2011.

They aren't big enough yet. The bananas still have quite a bit of growing to do. :>)

Looking very nice. Very, very nice.
Bought myself a banana plant 3/4 weeks ago. It's looking good so far. Has produced a new leaf already, and another one is showing its tip.
Whether anything will come of it, time will tell, if I don't kill it first. lol. ;o)

Lindalooloo:
Thanks! I have lots of banana varieties growing around the yards.
Good luck with your banana plant. Banana plants grow very quickly in summer...here they can grow one leaf a week.

What a treat Delonix to be able to grow your own...I would love that... :))

Thankyou Andy;
We haven't got 'Summer', bit mine did grow a leaf in just over a week, and the new leaf shooting, is looking good, so there's hope yet, I may just get some Bananas. lol.
There were only 3 leaves with a 4th one opening, when I bought it, so it's not that big, and one leaf is almost half the size of the plant. lol. :o)

Yes, I've been growing bananas for years. My Mysore lady finger bananas are the best. They're so sweet! :>)
I currently grow 7 varieties of bananas.

Sandra:
Thanks! :>)
It's highly unlikely bananas will ripen out of a tropical or subtropical climate. Bananas need 3 - 5 months (after blooming) of continuous warm to hot weather to develop and ripen.

You are so lucky to have your own bananas growing in your own back garden, my OH eats loads it would save us a fortune if we could grow them here.

My plant is looking good. Another new leaf has almost finished opening, and that is just in a week.
How big this plant will eventually grow, I've no idea, but OH has asked me if I plan to take the greenhouse roof off, if need be. lol.

Sorry I didn't see your previous comment!
That's great news...another bananas leaf! :>)
Typically from early Spring - Fall banana plants here can put out a leaf a week (in the ground). They're super fast growing plants.

My leaf is almost open. So that's in just a week.
It's still in the pot it came in, as I'm not sure what to do with it at the moment. lol.
I do have it in the greenhouse, but if it carries on growing at this rate, I will have to take the roof off. lol. :o)

That's great! Banana plants can grow tall, depending on the variety...there's many dwarf forms, also.
