As most who know me know I’m man avid fan of Gardener’s question time. I’ve been listening to it for longer than I can remember. Over the years we’ve lost many popular presenters and panelists, like John Cushnie who died suddenly a few weeks ago. Not only did he know his stuff but he was very amusing/entertaining. I’m not a TV person mainly as I think it’s programmed to appeal to, lets say ‘the younger audiences’, a bit odd really as it’s the younger people who go out more in the evening. I confess that I have 8 radio sets as I listen to radio 4 all day, I even have one in my GH. OK they are inexpensive sets, most bought from car boot sales but my HI Fi on which I listen to Classical music is or was when I bought it very expensive. In 5 years they’ll ALL be rendered useless when ‘they’ force us to go digital. The government won’t say how the changeover will be paid for but I doubt they’ll pat to replace all mine.

I heard about this on Friday too Heron, there's not been too much information on it, and they seem to have kept it very quiet, I'm so glad I got a Digital one at Christmas, but there are going to be a lot of people that are going to be put out by yet another ridiculous move on behalf of the gov't.

Oh dear, I didn't know this. As you say, it's been kept quiet. I am wondering about my car radio? Will we have to look into this when we next replace a car? I love radio but I am a bit deaf so I worry about the volume as I have close neighbours.

Nice avatar Sprog, is it your car?

there are still quite a lot of places where dab is difficult to get and even normally there are times when reception goes altogether or it sounds as if they are talking under water-- sort of bubbling-- so I don't know how they can remove it yet mine only works in certain places in the house and we live on a slight hill in the midlands, nothing in the way of reception !

Hi from another radio 4 addict....yes even The Archers, the only soap I follow. I drive my husband mad, but what he doesn't understand is that I need one in most rooms or I'll miss something lol:-) I did buy a digital radio and promptly lost the instructions! Now when I switch it on, I have to mess about with tuning as I can't leave it tuned in to R4:-( Maybe we could all have a tiny digital portable i.e. worn on a string round our necks, or as a brooch or badge which we carry with us constantly, that way we would only need one:-) Have you noticed the chair of GQT has become more jocular lately? Maybe he's trying to make us miss John Cushnie less:-)

Mad

I heard it being discussed on Radio 4 this morning Heron, and it sounds to me that it isn't really a definite thing even now. They did say that there would be help for the Elderly, although Heron I shouldn't think that would extend to 8 each !!
I too listen to Radio's 3 and 4 and have a tiny portable battery one which I take everywhere with me.
Even digital TV is far from perfect, we get a lot of interference depending on the weather probably or so it seems.

Like you Heron we mostly listen to radio as we can`t stand most of the tripe that passes for entertainment on TV (where has the good drama gone) good dialog in any programmes seems to have disappeared. Anyway as Mad has already said it was mentioned on Radio 4 this morning that there would be help for the elderly, but I cant see them replacing our 4 radios!; we shall wait and see.

i hadnt heard of this either but only listen to radio on allotment or in car, 8 Heron.. blimey charlie i have a modern wind up one thats useless unless you have muscles like popeye to keep winding it up i also have an old bush set that still works fine its got the old stations on it Luxenburg etc but its stuck in the back of the wardrobe ,our reception is not good either the slightest bit of ..wind ..rain and it goes off but we are in a built up area sorry to say..

i read about this in the paper........ i dont see why we should all have to renew our radios...............its going to be quite costly when the time comes.......

29 Mar, 2010

nice blog , when we go digital you can be sure the government won```t help out with the cost of new radios !!!

29 Mar, 2010

Surely they could ringfence something;-)

29 Mar, 2010

I do have a digital radio Heron and I`m quite happy with it. The only problem being is that I`ll have to buy some sort of adaptor for my car radio...ridiculous. It`s all about money of course! :o(

bornagain. I recon we'd better vote for "The Ringfence Party" ;-)) I've just remembered, I have two more, a wind-up and a tiny thing that you plug into your ears. With VAT set to rise just imagine how much the Gov will make if we all have to buy new ones, just like the TV. Whatever you do, don't mention the EU electric sockets, they're only a few quid (plus fitting by a qualified electrician) but we all have about 50.

29 Mar, 2010

I didn't know we had to have new sockets Heron, when's this? :-(

29 Mar, 2010

There were plans for this years ago but it seems to have been shelved, like driving on the right, lets hope it stays that way.

Bornagain, it's so nice to know that I'm not alone in being a Radio 4 fanatic, and for the same reasons, I even listen to 'Woman's Hour' !! It would be nice if there was a forum exclusively for Radio 4. As for The chair of GQT I think you're right, John Cushnie left a big hole. I've also noticed a slight change since it has changed producers. It used to be a Taylor made production. It's still a brilliant programme and it's a great way to relax while your Sunday lunch goes down. It's sad for all those who can't 'watch' the radio as it's so much better than TV.

I think I mentioned a while ago about internet radio I must say its the clearest reception of any radio, at the moment its --I think-- in its infancy but if 'they' make it more easily available it beats dab hands down !

30 Mar, 2010

That's a new one on me Pam, do you mean the BBC iPlayer?

30 Mar, 2010

no quite different, I was given it as a christmas present and it has to be 'linked 'to the pc in the house ( I didn't set it up) and it isn't portable (maybe in the future?) but the coverage is excellent and if you unplug it and take it to another room it remembers your favorites. You have hundreds of stations all over the world quite amazing. But if you google internet radio you'll have access to the stations and if for example you put radio 4 as a favorite you could open another tab and listen whilst you are using the internet e.g. on Goy !!

30 Mar, 2010

Pam I tried to find Radio 4 but it seems they haven't heard of it. I'm a bit of a bore but I don't want any other station, except Classic FM. which I get direct as I do with Radio 4 on iPlayer. I have Classic FM on my task bar so that I can ID a piece of music that comes from my Hi-Fi via head phones.

30 Mar, 2010

I just had a look at google and there seem to be one or two to access R4 but its much easier on the actual internet radio, I hope that this develops in the future if they do replace analogue as its a much better quality sound for me

Hi Heron
yes I heard about this too - what about radios on mobile phones, I wonder? I use mine in the garden quite often.

We should set up a protest group?
