Did you have anyone knock on your door on January 1st to wish you 2018 greetings? The old tradition was for boys only to do this. The householder would give them pennies as thanks.

Eirlys the old customs have died out now.
People always wanted to see boys and not girls, but the boy had to have dark hair ... I remember everyone wanting my black haired brother to visit them first on New Yrs Day. I was no good because I had light gingery hair. They didn't want me. So it wasn't anything against girls, it was some boys too.

I could never, in a million years, learn to speak Welsh.

You could if you had someone to help you. My English grandfather could speak it perfectly.

I didn't utter a word of English until I was 8 yrs old. It wasn't needed.
