Gentle bike ride along the river side

We decided, as it’s the ‘last’ day of the warm weather, we’d take a gentle bike ride out. 🚴‍♀️
We cycled behind the bund hill – foot/cycle path – to see how things were looking. It had been landscaped/tidied. It’s a bit wild now, but, the cats, rats and mice love it, I’m sure. Plus the birds and the fox! It’s definitely lower at one end, much higher at our end.
We passed Siemens too, which is extremely close to our house. I try to pretend it’s ‘Cape Canaveral’ (especially at night ) – if I look without my glasses on or contact lenses are out!!! 🚀
One pic shows the Humber river/estuary and if you zoom or squint, the Humber Bridge is far off in the distance!!! 🔭
We went to look at another bridge, a fairly new one across Castle street, as it’s been open for pedestrians, bicycles etc for several weeks now. Nice to see the changes afoot for the city, from the bridge.
Lots of people out enjoying the sunshine, although many not abiding by the social distancing rules…no surprise there.
All the same, I enjoyed being out, I took my time and just took it easy, freewheeling at times – no effort required!

Thank you, Julia! There’s a mix of all sorts around here!
The bund hill is a sound barrier between us and the docks.
Our houses are build on the old Timber dock. It’s actually taller than our house. We can’t see over it at all. It’s very vertical too. It was ‘lightly’ landscaped when our houses were built. We moved in from new, in 2000.
We used to see the odd ‘Walker’ on top of the bund!!!! Plus we even saw a cyclist or two! However, the plants and trees soon grew, some quite quickly and no one could walk along the top. It does have a lot of brambles. OH went up our bund section and dug them all out by hand! We planted several shrubs up there, junipers, forsythia, genista, rosemary, escallonia and others..
Our neighbours followed suit. In fact, one couple we are friends with and feed the cats when they are away, have a greenhouse built at the bottom of theirs, they had some workmen stabilise it and place steps at one side.
They live next door but one. It’s at the. Ottom/back of all the gardens. Right at the end of our cul de sac, the bund is quite a big part of their actual garden.

Yes, it’s been a smashing few days, Paul! Thanks for the like!
I do love to cycle down to the marina and around Old Town.
I’m pleased the wildlife have a haven right at the back of the gardens! Our cat just loves to go a-roaming up there and beyond..
The news today!! Some places have been jam packed full of these silly people! Once they have a drink too - it just makes their behaviour worse!!

Please don’t worry, Paul. You posted a lovely message.
Yes, I do hope things don’t regress. It’s been absolutely dreadful for so long. Some people just don’t care or are unintelligent sadly.

Paul - have to agree. How crazy and selfish some people are!

Julia, on a whole it has been successful. Sometimes you forget there are things going on over the other side of the bund! It can be quiet.
When they were constructing piling several years ago, for the Siemens factory, it was noisy during the day, but it didn’t affect me apart from a Friday when I wasn’t at work.

Interesting set of photos, Kate. I'm glad to see you feel up to a bit of gentle exercise, and what fascinating areas you have beside you. I've had trouble trying to 'understand' your bund, but I 'get it' now. Great that your actions have managed to get neighbours to plant up too. It's such a shame that the gorgeous weather is about to revert. We enjoyed having old friends round for tea and cake this afternoon. Such moronic behaviour in the parks - some have gone stir-crazy!

Thank you, Ange. Yes, the bund hill is a bit ‘ unusual’. I’m pleased it’s there to an extent, it lends privacy at the back of the house. Sometimes I look out and I think, I could be anywhere, well, sort of!!!!
Good to hear you have managed to meet up with fiends for tea and cake...lovely! I bet you had a really good catch up too. Long overdue, isn’t it! Saying that, we were all ‘stuck in lockdown’ for a good reason...
Yes, I know, some idiots out there have gone completely insane!

Lovely views of Hull and the Humber Kate. It is a shame that people don't observe the rules but I think they think being outside is ok.

Victoria was at uni in Nottingham and she was so cross at the news of the brawl in the arboretum there. Apparently the council shut it yesterday. Many of the students are horrified that they are being blamed rather than the local youths.
At one of our local wild spaces [Beverley Westwood] people even forced empty beer bottles into the ground , just leaving a couple of inches of the base visible.
Thankfully it is the minority of people.

Thank you, Mossy. I hope you do get the chance to return to France this year at some point! I'm sure you must be missing family and friends x

Thank you, Eileen. It was definitely an opportune time yesterday, weather lovely wasn't it! Funnily enough, as we cycled along the river side, Peter Levy was strolling accompanied by a lady, and offered us a hello! We did see the news last night, people here and in other cities have been downright selfish and ignorant.
I can imagine Victoria was saddened to see events unravel in Nottingham...

I'm pleased to see you're getting your strength back Kate , my granddaughter was at Nottingham Uni as well , can't understand them being so silly what happens to their brains when they go to Uni ???

Lovely photos Kate and glad that you managed a bike ride.

We have a local woods that was put up for construction of 300 houses end of last year. It's on the edge of our nearest town. The town has fought it going through as it is used by many local for walks and the River Tern going though it 2hich floods every year. Suprisingly the town has won and planning permission has been turned down.
As for what has been going on, feel like it is last summer all over again with nothing learnt. We are told to care for the environment for the younger generation yet not only are they breaking the rules but then leaving the places covered in rubbish. We plan to stay home over the Easter weekend and be antisocial 😂

Thank you, Amy! Very kind of you, 😊
It has been a sad couple of days with all the trouble in some of the towns and cities...I do think it’s a real mix of ages though.

Hello Jen! Thank you, I did feel better getting some fresh air and exercise - I was a bit shattered on the way back! 🥱
Gosh, Jen, that was a lot of houses!!! I bet your all relieved the construction didn’t go ahead! It’s a familiar story, I see some villages and small towns where I drive through or visit patients and it’s sadly happened there! ..and on land that floods!!! Crazy...
People are really selfish at times, aren’t they! OH and I were on our bikes, I’d slung a tunic and jeans and trainers on...some people were dressed up to the nines when we reached the marina! Then I thought, who cares! I do think their ‘bubbles’ seemed a bit ‘too big’ though..
My friend was queuing outside the chemist recently, as per social distancing guidelines. She said an elderly gent came right up to her and said ‘ are we still queuing?’ She said, yes, we still have to queue and follow the guidelines due to the virus.
He said, ‘but, why? It’s all gone now..we’re ok..’
She had to reiterate to him the virus hadn’t gone and we still had to abide by the rules - she said this in the nicest way she could!
Nothing wrong with being anti-social this weekend, Jen! ☺️

Kate what an interesting area you live in - a bit of all sorts! I was surprised to notice its only two years since you were asking for ideas about planting your bund - it feels as though we've known you for years and years! Its nice to know what's on the other side of the bank.

Jen, three cheers re the planning!

We went into town today and there were very few people around - but its a very small town...

Thanks Sue! It definitely has a mix bag of things going on...
I know how time flies!!! I’m very happy to a member of this lovely group of people!
I have to say, Hull wasn’t too bad, not as bad as the big cities..

Lovely blog Kate ... I like that slippery walkway to the sea! Interesting to learn more about your ‘bund’ - as Ange said it’s easier to picture it now. I wondered if the third picture shows the back of it, but probably not or you would have said 🙂.

Thank you Sheila, it is a nice place to live, despite Siemens being so close - I just think, well it’s jobs for people..
Yes, the 3rd pic shows the back of our bund, well, we think we may have been not as far along the path as we should have been, ie. our back end is slightly further along as in behind me taking the pic. Our bund is higher, it’s higher as it nears the waterside. Sorry if I’ve not explained it very well. 🙂

Your explanation is fine, Kate. The only other way would be to send up a drone to take photos from above! We certainly learn a lot on this site 🙂.

Thank you, Sheila. A drone would be a great idea! One of our neighbours has recently bought one. We don’t know him very well, but, our friends who live next door but one seem to chat to him often, so, they sent us a video of our area he had sent to them. Looked amazing!
You’re right, this site is invaluable!
