Blue skies above the bund hill.

I zoomed in this morning and tried to capture some of the bund top and along. It’s not the best pics..the bund runs along for quite a distance, it forms a circle around the ‘village’ and the river is at the other side.
One of my neighbours planted a leylandii several years ago…mmm. Ok it may lend stability with the roots, but, I’m not sure I’d have planted it up there. It just lends some privacy which I’m happy with.
Colours are changing slowly…

Beautiful vibrant tints of cobalt blue. This reminds me of the artist Maxfield Parrish who was well known for creating these kind of skies in his paintings.

Thank you, Loosestrife! I will look up this artist now. It's been a lovely couple of days. Mild in the afternoon.
The bund is higher than the houses and quite vertical. It's aimed at being a sound barrier from the docks beyond. But, sometimes you forget there are things going on back there, fortunately!

Julia, the part behind our gardens runs along about 200 metres or more. Then there's a gap for a roundabout off the 'village' then it starts again. Not sure how long the next part is..

What a lovely blue sky Kate and you have captured it well!

Interesting Kate … I had no idea that the bund is higher than the houses! Good for privacy I guess …

Beautiful Kate, the autumn colours along the bund against that lovely blue sky look amazing, I also didn't realise how big it actually is, was it built for protection against flooding as well as the noise...

The others have said it all!

Lovely photos Kate. We've been so blessed these last few days with beautiful weather. The autumnal colours are underway now.
Your bund is much larger than I'd thought too, it must shelter the village from winds and storms?

East Yorks can certainly put on a lovely day. Perfect for a motor bike ride ;o)

Thanks, Sheila. Yep, it's quite high. I remember when we moved in 22 years ago, it was quite bare with new shrubs planted on it..'flat' on top...now we've seen a lot of growth and added to it too.

Thanks Sue, I'm pleased you like the pics, albeit slightly blurry due to zooming in! I believe it was mainly built as a sound barrier. One of my neighbours - leylandii chap - has a greenhouse built in to a shelf at the bottom he dug out!
We've recently had new flood defence/alleviation scheme installed by the river and right along to the Humber Bridge...

Thanks Sue 😊

Aw thanks, Janey! That's kind. You're right, we've had some lovely weather haven't we! The odd shower overnight, funny enough, I came out of yoga at 7pm there...it was raining heavily! 🙁
I'm also enjoying my travels through your neck of the woods this month...gorgeous autumn colours!
The bund definitely lends some shelter from the winds..thankfully!
Hope you are keeping well 😊

Spot on, Eileen!!! 👍🏍

You won’t have to go far to see two examples of Parrish’s art Kate. You can view them on the web as presented on the vinyl record album cover of Elton Johns’s “Caribou “ and the cover of the Moody Blues album “The Present”.

Wow! Thanks Loosestrife. I'll have a look now.

It looks like you are surrounded by your own man=made ridge of hills, Kate. It's fascinating how quickly these places get covered in vegetation, even if left to their own devices.

That’s a good definition of it, Ange. It feels quite private, thankfully. The shrubs planted initially have grown to create stability and have really been great in lending some shelter too.
Many of us have planted on the bund and it’s added its appeal.

To prevent soil erosion on such earthen mounds the attractive low growing plant Securigera varia aka crown vetch is used quite often in the States. It does a pretty good job too if planted carefully to minimize its potential to become invasive.

16 Oct, 2022

Loosestrife, I wasn’t sure what you meant by Crownvetch so I googled it. This is growing on the bund hill, I recognised it immediately. No one has planted it, but it is spreading - not too rapidly. ? Seed dropped by birds or air?

16 Oct, 2022

Seeds are spread by wildlife. The seeds remain viable for 15 years.

That’s quite some time - which is pleasing to know, Loosestrife.
