PRETTY CORNER

I HAVE WANTED TO DO THIS BLOG FOR SOME TIME BUT NEVER GOT ROUND TO IT. I WAS LOOKING THROUGH MY PICTURES AND IT MADE ME REMEMBER THAT I WANTED TO DO THIS. PRETTY CORNER IS THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF MY FRONT GARDEN.WHEN I CAME HERE FIVE YEARS AGO, THERE WERE SOME OLD INJURED CONIFERS, THE LARGEST OF WHICH WAS ON THIS CORNER. I HAD NO HOPE OF CUTTING THEM DOWN, BEING DISABLED AND ON MY OWN, SO I CLEARED UNDERNEATH AND GREW SOME CHILEAN GLORY VINE TO GO UP IT. WHITE ALYSUM HAD COLONIZED UNDERNEATH THE CONIFER SO I ENCOURAGED IT TO GO FURTHER. THEN MY NEIGHBOUR OFFERED TO CUT IT DOWN BUT HE COULD ONLY CUT THE BRANCHES OFF, SO I AM LEFT WITH A SKELETON CONIFER. MY NEW HUSBAND HAS NOW TIDIED IT UP MORE BUT I STILL HAVE A BROWN WISENED TRUNK.SO I SET TO TASK TO PRETTY IT UP.THE FOLLOWING PICTURES ARE DIFFERENT STAGES AND SEASONS OF THE SAME SOUTHEAST CORNER.THIS LAST PHOTO IS HOW THE CORNER IS LOOKING NOW IN MARCH.

You've made that into a really lovely area, the tree is begging for lots of Clematis on it too (i don't know what chilean glory vine is) ..... that would look great !

What a difference a few plants can make, I would certainly put some clematis up the skeleton ( as suggested by Louise) Eccremocarpus scaber is a beautiful vine to use, I love it.

It's so colourful and 'pretty' you wouldn't see the tree.

If you likin rose, hten this is good place for Rosa xanthina - 'Canary Bird' (Climbing Rose).
If you likin to clematis to, hten choose an ALPINA to grow wiht it then you have many flower in may an june, and september an october.
this way you can call it the pretty wonderful corner, but i expectin your nieghbors will do htat for you!!!

It does look pretty now........I had to cut a conifer down last year in my dog run area and like you I`m left with the trunk, I am hoping to disguise it completely with climbers, the top I use for bird feeders at the moment but last summer I had hanging baskets as well which took ones mind off the bare trunk, as mine is in the dogs run I am going to need a very tough,climber............

thanks folks for all your comments i cannot put a proper climber up it as there is no place you can dig an sufficient hole as the soil is shallow and the roots are everywhere, for the last two years i have put sweet peas up it , purple one year and red the next, i plan to put white ones up it this year plus the chilean glory vine and some morning glory, i have sowed wine coloured ones and moody blue mix and also the red cardinal ones. they have all just germinated so i will choose which to use later, watch this space!!
