Oh Gosh!!..... Not Feeling So Guilty Now...

The rain stopped for a while so I took a wander around, (as you do) passing by the stumpery, I was pondering on the design, (as you do if you’re anything like I am)

I’m still awaiting delivery of my ferns so apart from moving things around a bit I can’t do anything much until they arrive and I sort out the planting, however I was looking at the stump and wondering how easy it would be to gouge out a planting pocket, I never expected this to happen…

The centre was like poking your finger in a soggy sponge and then it scooped out like sawdust..

That hole goes right down to the earth, good planting pocket for me but made me think, how long before that tree would have become dangerous, I have felt really guilty in the past few days but now I have a feeling of relief…..

Wonder if our Willow had the same problem? Looked fine.

If the hole is big enough You could have a pot plant there and change it with the season, or when you felt like it.

You made a good decision then in the end! Like the others above I'm looking forward to seeing your fernery! Have you now decided what you are going to put in the hollow in the trunk?

It was meant to go wasn't it, could have been very nasty if it had fallen, unlike the apple tree the willow didn't have any signs of being distressed in any way, the main reason for why I felt guilty.
I was thinking of trying one of the smaller spreading ferns in that hole but I'm still pondering, also thought about a piece of the black grass, however that I think is earmarked for the apple tree stump...I have to browse all the various pages to see other peoples creations...

Will you plant something in the hole or get rid of the stump

I'm going to plant it up Hywel, was thinking one of the little spreading ferns and then let Mother Nature do her thing with lichens and mosses...

Our willow has been struck by lightening twice now, we had to cut a big bough off where it was split. We stacked the logs & they all sprouted!

It'll be interesting to see your stumpery developing.

Looking forward to your fernery , so low maintenance as well which is a bonus , I use my fern corner to dump all the leaves in the Autumn which they enjoy.

GW two weeks ago they had that guy he grew 100's of them

Gf I sincerely hope my stump doesn't sprout, in fact I was wondering about treating it, I know they can sprout quite easily as I've used branches in the past to make wigwams and had those sprout...

Gnarly I'm weeks behind with GW, I always record them and watch at my leisure, I'll have to look out for that one, my leaves can go in the same place when the time comes, I considered bark but only used it once before in our dogrun, it was a complete mess with two dogs and I vowed never again, its a lot easier to clean up off the grass..
