April Already....!!!!

Its really colourful in my garden, I love springtime with all the leaves beginning to burst forth, blossom appearing in the gardens and all the spring flowers everywhere, lots of cheer when out and about…
All the rain we’ve been having recently(lot of the days sunshine at the same time around here ) has created perfect conditions and the gardens loved it, everything is doing well and something new pops up or opens every day..
We had three lovely days this week so you all know where my time was spent…

Below is the bottom pond with the Marsh Marigold already strutting her stuff, it had lots of frogspawn, most of which has disappeared already, as you can see it is protected so definitely cannot blame the pets, that’s bad in one way and good in another because that is a sure sign my newts are still in residence, I can only hope that the fish do not eat all the spawn in their pond….

After mowing the lawns I planted out some Doronicum plants that I had grown in the g’house, although they aren’t showing clearly in the above photo, I placed some in the Photina bed, it still looks quite bare from this side but is actually full of perennials, when the hellebores go over I intend to split some, will then plant more down this end so that I won’t have this bare patch during the winter and early springtime, need more bulbs for that area …

Next my rose garden, shame I didn’t find a pic from last week as it was a mass of miniature daffs…

Changed my mind about this, last year I said I was digging the plants and bulbs out and laying granite as the birds made such a mess looking for grubs, every morning the pavers were covered in soil, however the plants are spreading so well its not going to happen as much, so the plan is to plant more spreading plant and allow them to mingle, you know I love a good mingle….

Still too nice to go inside so I wandered around with my long handledtrowel, tidied the bed behind the fishpond….

…and worked my way across the raised bed at the bottom, the furballs have been very naughty and had padded it down, mainly Pepper, Harriet only goes in the corner., Pepper gets yelled at every time I see her heading in that direction, I tell her she’ll go back where she came from, lol… partly my own fault, I had to cut away a lot of the Hebe last year, it was dying back on one side, similar to what happened a few years back to some of my others, I saved them, hoping to be as successful with this one, if not I will try something else, only time will tell

It really suffered in the drought last year, I lost a lot of the spreading geraniums but its picking up again, I planted Doronicums in some of the gaps whilst working my way across, as you can see in the pic below the bit that runs along the side, behind my garden shed does well despite being in the shade of the apple tree for six months of the year…

Did I go indoors nope !!!
I tackled the huge hardy fuschia that was growing underneath the Hibiscus, between the arch and my well, it was too crowded in that area, I love it but it swamped everything else, the more I pruned it back the better it grew., the pic below is from the same one, I split it about ten years back the one I eventually managed to dig up was twice the size…Its in a bucket of water and is going into Juliets front garden…..

Another reason for removal was the fact it was a mass of bluebells and grape hyacinths, impossible to clear as it was…

That’s better, it took some doing I don’t mind admitting….
More to admire some not actually in the garden but just as pretty…

That was a very satisfying day., Tuesday was spent helping Juliet on her new allotment, today its cold and rained for most of the day, so I had a lighter day and caught up with indoors…..

I love "walking" round your garden Sue!
You had a very busy satisfying day, didn't you!
I can't say what I liked the best as I like it all!
Everything is doing so well and aren't you neat and tidy with your lawn! You have more energy than me!
In your last blog, I asked you how you made your garlic douche. Could you let me know please.
As you may remember I made a small wild life pond for Rick, but have never had any frogs. I don't know why!
I often wonder how they know a pond is there!

Sue, I really enjoyed walking around your garden as there is so much in flower, with so much more to come too!

Is the allotment in a good state, or is there a lot of weeding to be done? The ones where we used to have our plot are an absolute disgrace, apart from three, they are all overgrown ... it makes me cross when so many folk would love to take one on.

its a lovely mixture - always something interesting! I wish I could grow doronicums but they just turn their toes up. funny isn't it? Your Camellias are so beautiful - did you water them last summer? I lost a season a while back through forgetting to do it. Love the Periwinkles too. Even not flowering the leaves are great for little miniature flower arrangement and I miss them in our present garden.
Its good to hear you had a good display of miniature daffodils - they are lovely aren't they? I think I prefer them to the big ones.

Thankyou Amersterdam, F'few and Callie for your lovely comments, after last years drought and that extreme heat, I am surprised how everything has bounced back and also how early some of them are...

Rose my lawn does suffer with the way the furballs race down the centre, could be worse though it could be amongst my flowerbeds...The garlic spray/douche is very easy to do, I chop 4/5 cloves, boil for about 15mins, I've even used powder if no cloves, it works just as good, allow to stand overnight, pour through a tea strainer or cloth or your spraygun will clog, add a couple of squirts of washing up liquid if spraying the leaves as that stops the liquid just running straight off, it helps prevent blackspot and aphids on roses, lily beetles don't like it either, in fact its good for many things, you can buy it Rose but my way is cheaper...xx As regards the frogs, years ago I would have told you to get some spawn from somewhere but thats not allowed now because of the spread of disease so you just have to hope one finds its way to your garden....

Shirley the allotment is going to be hard going at first, two thirds has been allowed to get overrun with grass, we are lifting that and building a heap, come next year that will be lovely earth to spread back on the garden, Juliet is skilled at doing that as mum taught her that trick year ago, lol....When we went to view it the lady who met us said there are plenty vacant all different sizes, Juliet expected to be waiting ages but not the case, its a shame as its very good growing ground and very cheap, I guess the people here don't want to bother.....

Hi Sandra, I had Friday off as it was our sons birthday, we took a drive over to Boston for a visit, yesterday I spent hours in the g'house pricking out seedlings and also sowed more, would you believe my back was killing me last night, lot easier digging than standing in one place doing that job so today I only did a little bit in the garden....

Hywel we are doing well considering its a holiday weekend its been glorious, I need a cold day to catch up indoors but I don't feel in the slightest bit guilty, I whispered that bit, lol...

Stera my red one has no buds at all, they both get fed and watered at the same time and are placed near one another, it looks very healthy though, perhaps I'll get flowers next year, the Periwinkle came under the fence many year back, as you say its pretty all the time so I allowed it to stay..
I had Doronicums for many years then like yours they died, even in my daughters garden, don't know why Stera, I love them so decided it was time to replace them....I love the miniatures but they rarely return for me Stera, bit like my crocus they just disappear.....

Siris thankyou, I nearly missed you out, its my happy place so I don't count that as work, we won't mention ironing, lol.....

Well Lincs that lovely stroll round your garden has fulfilled my need for a pick-me-up, it is so overcast and cold here today and I was going to do some tidying up round the pond but stayed inside instead ... By the way, yours is looking so good especially after its drastic pruning.

Wow, Sue! It certainly looks like your garden has welcomed April with open arms! It's alive with colour and cheer. You've a whole blog full of interest going on. Lots of new growth and spring blooms looking healthy.
I lost a few things, my fuchsia that I bought prior to the drought was a starter one and it just hadn't settled. Think we've suffered a few losses haven't we! I think my Japanese anenome may have been lost too. We shall see.
Your spring bulbs in pots look happy and cheerful. You've been very busy tidying and rejigging and removing etc...bet you feel you've a spring in your step and you've enjoyed getting out there in the spring sunshine too!

Linclass, Ty. For the info about the garlic douche. I am definitely going to try it this year on my Roses & Lillies. How much water per 5 garlic cloves?

10 Apr, 2023

Sue, I guess overrun with grass is better than Bindweed! I am surprised Juliet had a choice of plots, as you say, folk don't seem to want them these days, yet I read they were being snapped up in Lockdown! I can't bring myself to walk past our local allotments as it's heartbreaking to see the state they are in ... :o(
