Scarifying the lawns

My number one hate about gardening is scarifying the lawns.I start by putting down a weed and feed worrying that I miss a bit or over do another bit or maybe spilling some. Then there is the worry that it doesn’t rain and I have to water it in.
I then wait a couple of weeks while the moss turns black and then it is time to scarify the lawns.
I live in Glasgow where moss grows in great abundance and if I don’t do all this I can’t get the lawnmower to move on my north facing slope.
It takes me two days to do the job front and back of the house and I have filled twenty-one black bin bags with moss.
To add to my problems there is no brown bin pick up and so I am stuck with the black bags until well………I don’t know.
It makes a big difference to the lawns and so I am very, very glad to have finished the job.

This is a reminder of the lawns we use to do before our move , I must admit there are some jobs I don't miss .....

We got a new machine this weekLinda, and it does the job brilliantly. It is the best thing for your lawn. Apparently if you have acidic soil you will always have moss. I tend to put my mosskiller on in the autumn and then leave it till spring.

if you have alkaline soil you will always have moss too ;o).
Beloved bought a scarifyier 2yrs ago and whenhe used it it looked as if there was no grass left, but it did look much better after a month or too. It needs doing again this year really.

My lawn is so small, I use a grass rake, but it's not a job I enjoy.

I have to weed and feed both autumn and spring. It is just one of those jobs that needs to be done.
It will look good by the end of May. I had intended to buy a new scarifier this year, Karen. It will have to wait until the autumn. An edger however is a must.

All that effort is worth it, what you put in you get out and I don’t mean just the moss, looks really good what you have done.

A well kept lawn sets the rest of the garden off so well, hard work but so worth the effort. Just before the rain arrived at the weekend I sowed grass seed either side of our drive where the monster conifers had created ideal growing conditions for moss until their removal last Autumn. A much smaller area than yours, Linda, but I hope it will look as good and welcoming before too long.

I've put a like on this one as I admire anyone who will put this much effort into creating a lawn. My grass patches are just that, could never be a lawn, too many shady spots, too many Voles, rabbits and birds to dig it up and the moss is in short supply when the little birds get going with their nest building!
Yours looks lovely and as Xela says a nice lawn sets off a garden like nothing else - even mine looks good when it's first cut!

I admire you for doing all that, I hate the job, my lawns suffered dreadfully during the wet winter, the joys of sharing with pets and lawn that was more like a paddy field, now lack of rain is causing great big cracks to appear up near the house, I'll just have to be content with admiring yours Linda....

That's some seriously hard work, Linda! I have done the same in the past - distant past! You know it will look fabulous in a few weeks time! :)

Your lawns look wonderful Linda yes its hard work but worth it and good for your waste line good excercise I use to hate doing it too years ago .
How about making smaller bags of the moss and offering it to people who pass by for hanging baskets like a honesty table or moss free to take that will cut down the amount to get rid of I am sure people will be glad of the moss.

I think this Blog is a wonderful example on how hard people work in their gardens, so that they can enjoy in the little time they have to relax! good on you all. A wonderful place a garden as well as keeping you fit it is a wonderful healer, for anxiety. There are many eyesores about in gardens that are not loved.
