Nothing like a steam train - we spent 4 days last week - close to the West Somerset Railway - and spent 3 days out on the train - brilliant - lovely pictures by the way - we have been on the Welsh Highland but not on the Snowdon Railway - they don't allow dogs on that one - and they are usually with us when we are up that way - Jane

they all had an individual character unlike now they all look the same.
remember as a child running to the centre of bridges just to disappear in a cloud of steam and smoke for a moment I was on my own in a world of my own.Pre Dr Beeching. !

What is it about them? Nostalgia I guess...but they are so lovely! We've done the West Highland line twice, but they only put the steam on during the high season in July so we havent had the pleasure. We've been on a couple of the small tourist ones..one in Wales and one in Moray. :) love them!

Glad it bought back lots of memories. A long time ago when I was a child going to school, I remember standing in the middle of a bridge, watching the steam trains coming along, and I got covered in smuts.

I remember times like that too, Linda, and the drivers always waved to us and many of the passengers too :)

We've walk up the track to the summit beside the Ffestiniog railway when on holiday in Wales and traveled on a steam train up to Scotland can't remember which one ..I also remember standing on the bridge when we were kids as the steam trains went through leaving clouds of smutty smoke .
We still enjoy the sight of steam trains here as a railway station which was redundant at the end of our lane has been brought back to life by volunteers the station has re-enactment days , Days at War with military tanks. all very realistic with Germans and Americans in full dress etc. shooting each other , proper Dads army stuff ,the trains go a few miles up the track each way ,they have Father Christmas specials with mince pies also Jazz trains anything to make money to further their progress ...

Hi Amy, yes we've been on holiday and there was a re-inactment camp with people dressed up in 1940's clothes, and jeeps, a campsite and tanks, lorries etc. And on the train, a spiv trying to sell us things from his coat and jacket pockets. A couple of men dressed in military clothes with a stretcher, and some women dressed as char ladies with scarves round their heads and wearing pinafore aprons. Yes the American army were there as well and some of Dad's army lookalikes. They must really enjoy themselves.....

dont know how I missed this blog.
have you been to Pickering/whitby as that is the North Yorks railway and it is mainly steam trains. Goathland was the Hogwarts station in the HP films.
My youngest brother is one of the boilermakers at Grosmont engine sheds.

We went on that railway a long time ago, and once I went up on to the footplate and blew the whistle on one of the trains. It's very hot near the boiler, but I got off again before the train set off.
