Linnets in the Rowan Tree.

I’ve had these lovely petite little birds visiting the feeders since the winter when they joined the Chaffinches, Goldfinches and Greenfinches, they’ve continued to visit to present day and last weekend there were 3 pairs of them – i was chuffed to little bits !!!
Especially since someone told me that i “must be mistaken, they don’t visit gardens – let alone feeders”.
Well …. they do !!!

This tree is infront of my front garden and is surrounded by tall shrubs and other trees, this particular tree is about 35-40 feet away and these pictures were taken from a front bedroom window with a zoom lens – these birds are smaller than finches so it’ll be difficult to see them here but here they most definately are – look hard !!!!

Pic 1. Greenfinch on left feeder and Linnet on middle one.

Pic 2. Greenfinch moved up onto branch above feeder and it’s got a baby with it – it has a speckled chest (like a Linnet!) … Linnet’s head first into feeder !

Pic 3. Greenfinch and baby are still there and the Linnet’s got his head out now !

Pic. 4. Linnet male on the back of the middle feeder and female on the right one.

These are all just repeats of the other pics.

I have a ‘very’ strong pair of binoculars where you can actually see the birds tongues as they eat but sadly, this new zoom lens still isn’t anywhere near as powerful as the binos, ho hum.

An edit to this blog ……..
About half an hour after i’d published this i was sat out in the front garden and a Linnet came down to the birdbath to drink.
This has made my day – no, it’s made my year !!!!!
:-))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

Thanks everyone :-)
Pp, the first time i saw them i had to identify them in one of my bird books and i recognised them from the pictures almost immediately, the male has a red-blushed breast and the female a pale-ish beige - over the last week or so the males breast has got a more pronounced colour, as happens in the breeding season in many birds.

Thank you Flori, Balcony and Lemondog :-)))
This tree is quite a distance away from where i stand and take the photos from so it's hard to really show you what's what !!!
I have fantastically strong binoculars, shame i don't have the same quality camera lens though :-((((

They're supposed to be brilliant singers aren't they Loise? I think they used to cross them with canaries, and of course, people used to keep the cock linnet alone in a little cage so they would sing:-( No wonder we don't see any now, I envy you, I didn't even know what they looked like, but I remember my next door neighbour at my old house telling me there used to be flocks of them around. :-)

Ba, you're 'so' right, their song is lovely and varied too.
It's such a shame my camera can't show these birds better because they're so sweet and ..... because i recognise their song anywhere i now know that they're actually in a lot of areas around the town here - aswell as the rural parts ....... i hear them everywhere !!!!!
As for birds in cages ...... very sad :-((((
