This little bird is always in my back garden !
I thought i’d post a few pictures of it that i took earlier on, you can see it ‘listening’ for worms …. so clever !
(By the way, does anyone else have a Linnet visit their feeders ?
I saw a female here on the sunflower hearts just now, not seen one before so i’m chuffed to bits!)

Beautiful Louise, what a lovely bird the Thrush is. It looks quite happy in your garden. Last year we had one which found itself an anvil and saw off lots of snails, so I hope it will come back. The only thing is our bossy blackbird always chases it off all the time.
Very good photos.

Lovely photos, dont get thrushes in my garden, think when you live in a town you dont get to many differant birds.

I live right in the middle of a town Clarice, up on a hill overlooking it !

He's certainly listening.

Pamd, you could see him/her cocking his head to one side and then the other and then .... pounce - he had a worm ...... it was amazing !

Lovely pics Louise. I love the way they "listen" for worms...the blackbirds do as well......

He really looks at home in your garden, they are such attractive birds!

Lovely pic's...my Dad gets Linnets on his feeders...he's only 2 miles from me, in a more rural area....they love his rape seed!!

That's interesting Phil.
In a bird book i looked at it said they were a rare sight and in another book it contradicted that !
We have farmland around a lot of the town, aswell as the woods and parks in it, so we're quite well catered for with our birds :-))

lovely bird louise, i have one but the blackbirds dont like him so doesnt stay long enough to get a decent pic ;o))

Hi Louise...just had a look in my RSPB book and it says they often nest in rural gardens....so maybe you'll be lucky.

Louise, this is a wonderful set of Song Thrush photos. Thanks for sharing. Linnet's were a common sight when I was growing up in London - around the docks, along the (Thames) water front, in parks and especially around derelict bomb sites (full of weed seeds). Just checked their up to date status (Red Listed) on the RSPB website and it's a different story now ;-
Red list criteria
Globally threatened
Historical population decline in UK during 1800–1995
Severe (at least 50%) decline in UK breeding population over last 25 years, or longer-term period (the entire period used for assessments since the first BoCC review, starting in 1969).
Severe (at least 50%) contraction of UK breeding range over last 25 years, or the longer-term period.

Well, that explains why I've never seen a Linnet!
Lovely photos of your resident thrush - is he worried about Millie and Maddy?
11 Feb, 2010
Thanks Muddy, useful information there.
He picks his times Spritz ..... goes there when they're not around :-)))
11 Feb, 2010
also they were very popular as caged birds years ago muddy, maybe that didnr help the poulation either

Yes you're right Sandra. ..........All together now ! My old man, said 'follow the van, and don't dilly dally on the way'..etc. etc... (Where's Sixpence when you need her !) ....lol :-)

Yesterday I was out walking the dog as usual and was stopped in my tracks by a song thrush up in a tree singing his heart out! What a beautiful beautiful sound! It was as if spring had suddenly come to scotland! I'm going out there today to see if I can find him again! That sound was pure magic!

He really is a bonny bird I have seen them only once or twice in my garden .

I have a regular annual visitation by a mistle thrush. He comes when the pale pink berries on the sorbus are ripe and he picks them off a stem at a time until they are all gone and then disappears again! He must have a real thing for sorbus berries as none of the other birds seem that interested!
12 Feb, 2010
Mistle Thrushes are well known for 'adopting' (and defending against all-comers), certain trees that they will visit year after year. A bit like having your own personal restaurant !

This bird seems happy to share the back garden with blackbirds, robins and wagtails !!!!
The robin on the other hand hates everyone. He's a real bully and dive bombs all the birds in the back and front garden too.
12 Feb, 2010
Well I never Muddy!! lol! Robins though...you've got to love them even though they are bullies!
12 Feb, 2010
Hmmm, wouldn't say i love this one :-/
12 Feb, 2010
We've got blackcaps in our garden, male & female & they are real bullies, they even chase off Robins. They make a warning noise like two pebbles being knocked together at the same time as divebombing the other bird. I thought it was a thrush at first cracking a snail

Isn't it queer ??
The ones i see here are quite the opposite !!!
They're friends with the Tits, Dunnocks and Blackbirds too :-))
13 Feb, 2010
I didnt know they were listening!
14 Feb, 2010
Lovely set of photos...seems really at home in your garden Louise......
18 Feb, 2010
It's lovely to watch it, Bb :-))
18 Feb, 2010
We have one visit as well...but very shy this time of year.Well fed...keep finding snail shells in the borders !
18 Feb, 2010
Apart from the Thrushes eating the snails (and slugs), frogs will too, won't they ?
Ever since my neighbours removed their (large) pond last summer i've not seen a single frog, so i guess my slug and snail population will boom now :-(
18 Feb, 2010
Shame about that Louise...read somewhere that if you do one single thing for your wildlife....make a pond ! Goodness knows what damage is done by removing one....it takes all sorts..........
20 Feb, 2010
Bb, it really upset me when i heard they were going to do it, i tried changing their mind and telling them just how much wildlife would be damaged but .... they didn't care one bit ..... idiots.
And .... when i peeked through the ranch style fencing they have - what did i see ? An overgrown mess with the 'crater' at the back of it all, it used to be such a nice garden too :-(

I'm hoping Thrushes will nest in my garden again this year...
