Everything In The Garden Is Rosey !

It’s been a lovely sunny morning here and quite mild really, at 9 degrees.

In my front garden though it’s south facing and sheltered and the temperature was so high in one patch that you wouldn’t have believed me if i told you (the back’s shadier and colder in winter) and as i looked out of my office window it struck me, how in 3 years the front and back gardens have gone from empty, grass only areas to perfect (if small!) wildlife havens :-))))

As i typed the draft, the Blackbirds were squabbling about who got into the new birdbath first and there were more feeding on the ground (on Bill Oddies muesli!) with their friends the Blackcaps and Dunnocks and everyone out there was happy !!!
The little Dunnocks then go and have a few sips from the bird bath and nip back under the hedge for another snack ;-)

The Escallonia hedge provides great cover for all but the Tits, Dunnocks and Blackcaps especially, those little birds dart in and out of there all day long
:-)))

I’ve spent the last couple of days enlarging one of the middle borders out there and have planted some new things too and where the soil’s newly turned over they’re all having a whale of a time picking it over !!!

The plants ??
Well, they are ….Gypsophila paniculata Schneeflocke and G. Rosenschleier.
Verbena bonariensis,
Lychnis coronaria,
Liatris spicata and lastly
Eragrostis spicata.
I’m adding airy height and texture to the current low height planting scheme …. just can’t wait to see it mature now !
Hurry, hurry, hurry !!!

Verbena rigida in the same border, last summer.

Stachys macrantha in that border.

Same border showing another behind it !

Same border with yet another border behind it !!!

I don't think I would get any work done I'd be looking out the window all day! Your new planting scheme sounds great!

Thanks Sue and ..... errr, that's exactly the case, far too many distractions ;-)

Oh, so THAT's what you've been doing! It sounds lovely - and your new birdbath is popular now, I gather, after a slow start! :-))

You have some great plants Louise - always so much colour in your garden.
Its great that you've created a bird friendly garden, I think its a real privelege when the birds enjoy plants we've set with them in mind.

Dawn i agree, for a garden to become what you've wanted is wonderful !
I'm chuffed to bits that it's all come together :-))

Not far away from you Louise and have been freezing all day!
I got a new bird hanging post and they have just ignored it!
Your photos are a lovely reminder of summer .

It certainly stayed at around 5 - 6 degrees here - it just shows that a few miles makes a huge difference. No sun at all, either. :-((

Thanks Val :-)

Yes, a few miles makes a massive difference i've found. Speaking with other people in the county i often hear of quite large differences one way or another.

Beautiful pictures, Louise~ love the verbena!! My garden is now what yours probably was several years ago, and each year I try to add a few more beds, increase the size of another one, or two, and jam in another handful of plants here and there. Eventually maybe mine will look as lovely and established as yours. oh yes, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! :)

I've been working out there again today and i'm so looking forward to the spring and seeing everything come alive !

Stripes, that's Echinacea 'Pink Double Delight'.
A 14" high double .... i love it and have it in several places in the garden :-))
The last 2 days have been SO springlike, with it being warm and sunny, that it's starting to excite me :-)))))

Wagger, thanks for your kind words :-))

14 Feb, 2010

Ooooooooo I wish you'd stop telling us about your lovely springlike weather - it's HORRIBLE HERE!!!! :-(((((((

Wow... I'm green with envy! My borders are still just about defrosting and so are the tubs... I tested them yesterday and couldn'tget below about 1- 1and 1/2 inches... I was hoping to pot up some of my divided perrenials into them - decided not to divide the perrenials yet either!...

I do have a few - a very few - snowdrops looking like they might put their heads up but otherwise everything here is still more or less frozen solid.... Lucky, lucky you! I opened the greenhouse door today and 5 minutes later the heating came on as the temperature had gone below freezing...

I think I'll just have to concentrate on indoor seed sowing for the moment...

Has anyone got a set of Geoff Hamilton DVDs - can't remember what they're called - I borrowed them from our local Library and have just been watching the set about Kitchen Gardens - fantastic ideas...

Oh sorry Wagger.
There's nothing worse than someone going on about it is there. Sorry :-/

Lovely selection of plants, cannot believe you are putting plants in at the moment, it is still freezing here, and no sign of it letting up, still, I am very happy for you, I am sure it cannot go on much longer.....or can it?

14 Feb, 2010

15 Feb, 2010

You were sleep walking Wagger!!!

17 Feb, 2010

From the Met Office stats: Easter 1-3 April 1983 - this was the snowiest Easter with Scotland, the Midlands and Kent getting up to 10 cm of snow. Over the past 45+ years, snow has fallen quite regularly, even in lowland areas. For example, 1958, 1965, 1970, 1973, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1982, 1983, 1986, 1994 and 1998 were all years when snow fell at Easter.
My brother's the sleep walker, Daisy - I just sleep with my eyes open (apparently), LOL

18 Feb, 2010

Wagger thanks for that, cheered me up no end!!!!

19 Feb, 2010

Ever eager to please, that's me. LOL

20 Feb, 2010

21 Feb, 2010

21 Feb, 2010

am soo glad that we haven't had soo much snow as you are showing here Wagger! We did have an awful lot last year. pfff. I'd had enough by the middle of January and it was just starting THEN!!!

This year, finally, we're having a lovely mild winter and as far as I am concerned, it may come back this mild in any future time!

Louise? are you aware of the new echenacea plants? new colours and new shapes as well? I have some in my garden and hope to put in some more this year... will think of you, when I'll be buying them!
