Been away a bit

Once again, I’ve been a bit quiet for a while. Health problems again, which made me feel a bit “down”. Then a week of tests and treatments. It isn’t going to get better, but maybe with a bit of luck it will be a bit slower to get worse.

Anyway, to the garden – more doom and gloom I’m afraid. About 2 years ago, the chap who cuts our conifer hedge annually told us that it looked as if we have the fungal disease carried by an aphid, which gradually kills off conifers. Don’t know whether he meant just hedges. Anyway, our lovely hedge is definitely going brown in bigger and bigger patches. I’ll put some photos on later.
It is about 60 feet long. When it all looks brown and dreadful, it wouldn’t be feasible to have it removed, so I was thinking about that bamboo stuff to cover it. The kind that comes in rolls.
Any other ideas? I’m sure someone will think of something.
Just had a quick look through the current blogs. Some nice things.

Hello there Mad, good to see you , have looked at your photos and the one where the birds are on the bench with the hedge behind them, is this the hedge you mean ? Do the neighbours have a fence the other side ?

Hello Mad hope today you feel a lot better, yes I would say that bamboo fencing would look good there, why I say that is because I bought some and was quite pleased with the way it looks, if you take a look at my pics you will see but I put mine on a sloping garden i wanted to look very natural which I feel it does the job. Sorry to hear about your hedges. Hope you start to feel much better in your health and well being.

Yes Megan, thats it. There is a bit of a wobbly sort of fence behind.

Gina 1, I've looked at your pictures. Very nice. The bamboo stuff looks nice in your garden, but I doubt they make it 8 or 9 ft tall. We'll find out though.

Thank you both.

I'm sorry to hear that you're not well and am sending you happy vibes down the computer lines. I find that a sunny day with a cool drink in the garden helps the mood if not the symptoms so am sending one of those too.

Did you know that conifers breathe through their bark? This is quite important cos it means that if you are good and keep them closely cropped the foliage gets so thick that they get weak and then they cant breathe. So disease or no disease I would go over it with a sharp pair of secateurs and make lots of little holes in it to help it breathe (dont trust me trust the books I've been reading lately!) and then give it a damn good feed and water it in. Normally I wouldnt use an inorganic fertiliser but they are just the trick when something needs a good pep up.

Good luck. Don't give up on it yet - I have this on the best authority and will find out who said it when I get a minute.

It looks like your poor old hedge is coming out in sympathy...seemed to
make sense what sarah suggested you, to do, it cannot do any harm to
try!! `Hope you are feeling a bit better, i am glad you are back....take care

Thank you again all. Sarah, having looked on the web about this fungus, I really don't think we can do anything to stop it. I do appreciate your suggestions, but practically in our circumstances, what you describe would be beyond our capabilities unfortunately. Even feeding it would be almost impossible, as getting anywhere near the roots is almost impossible - for us.
Its no fun being decrepid! By the way, thank you for the vibes - very nice.
